Portrait Shots (show us your best)

lost on the mainland
Very nice work Honu. I would love to do a shoot in a location like that.

thanks :) I miss the islands :( Maui is my home but no longer their :(

the two top and very bottom are here in AZ though :)

whats funny is my main income was interior arch shooting but I did weddings cause I love people and got me out more ;) I liked it cause I could shoot in shorts and aloha shirt
here on the mainland you have to wear pants and shoes and stuff !!!! :)

have to scan in my work someday from other places
this is a bad scan :) have a coolscan 5000 to get all my slides done one day this was done on the flatbed so not as good as original
this was in Micronesia

SO I am trying out the Candid approach to see if I can capture some better moments.

Making cookies in the kitchen, I cant get the light right, flash seems too much and no flash seems too dark. I tried butting a peice of tissue paper over the flash for this one.

I told her she would not like that candy, but she insisted that she wanted to eat it.

What can I start to do different? These are all shot with the 50mm

Steve, love the one of Gabby crying....very candid and something that shows it's not a posed shot and more of a caught in the moment type of shot

Keep practicing around like you are with various settings, maybe trying some manual stuff to see what setting works good with your kitchen lighting and you'll get the hang of it.

Lots of times household lighting can vary with the types of bulbs, often multiple types used in the same room, so this is where shooting in RAW and being able to adjust your White Balance after the shot has been taken will really come into play

Couple of my wife's shots

We recently purchases a DSLR and here are a couple of favorites from my wife.

She took a photo class and this was for her homework to show motion. My daughter is spinning an umbrella behind her...

This is my other daughter who was being to happy go lucky to be captured with the slow shutter required for the previous shot.

those candies are nasty :) my girl got some for Halloween pretty sure they are the same but so so nasty !!! :) hehehehe

learning to do good candids is tough but like anything basics :)
light !! and LIGHT and did I say LIGHT are key and of course relaxed people
with a flash if you have a DSLR and can rotate the head learning to bounce light can really help out so you dont have direct flash
I dont like just pointing up at the ceiling :) but bouncing off walls or other reflective objects

in general sometimes outside if you can get light on the subjects face its nice
does not have to be :) for family stuff its nice though so think about light and how its falling on the face
as example in the second tinkerbell shot light looks like its coming in over the shoulder a bit so turning them into the light more ?

and you cant turn someone into bright sunlight either :) or they end up squinting
try googling open shade photography ?

again basics are nice but rules are meant to be broken the biggest thing that can make you learn is to take your kid out to the park and shoot from all sides a bunch and angles a bunch and make note of the light and how its falling then look at the shots you did and get a feel for what you like
then try to put some of that in memory and do that for dif times of the day
sound silly but will really let you start to feel and see the light !!

I love the light just as the sun goes down that 15 minutes of golden light is the best in the world :)
so really mid day sun is yucky to shoot in super early super late is best ? hour after sunrise hour before sunset and open shade are your friends
open shade could be lean up against the side of the truck
or under a big tree

really learning photography is one of those things that can take a lifetime and you still arent as good as you want to be :)

the first two shots the light is nice falls on them the first one is nice and short on her and him and makes a nicer mood :)

the 3rd shot of the couple kissing I was on the wrong side of the light ;) but used the light (sun) as part of the shot through her hair

so along with light positioning yourself which for good candid type is tougher cause you have to be thinking ahead the first two shots I had no control over the people but could control my feet and walked to the best location and in a sense wait for the shots

the bride leading her new hubby through the rocks
is a example I shot that about 4 times :)
its not a true candid shot but had some direction ! my direction was
ignore me and just go through those rocks then go down the beach about 50 feet and be together and do what you want then come back !
and I controlled where I stood
then when they came back I went to a dif spot and tried another angle this was the one I like the most though

so controlling your subject can sometimes come into it !
your kids at the park learn your angles and then say OK run to that flower and back for me and get some nice shots :)

again their is so much more to it than this but since you asked thats a small small starting point but its really just get out and shoot and look at what you like and ask yourlsef why you like it and what you would do to make it better :)

hope you dont mind :)
just for grins about one minute in PS
small thing quick dodge on the eyes and dark areas under eyes and a quick burn just to bring the focus in a bit on subject
I use a layer with curve and mask
then just a bit of contrast and pop

not a fan of the china doll skin look some do ? but thats me :)

I like edits to just bring out what is their subtlety without being to in your face

again this was just a super quick sometimes showing less than a minute in PS can do quite a bit once you get the grasp of it also if you just did a action on the whole thing ? it would not be the same

masking and layers if she enjoys it and moves forward learning PS can be a good thing

to me PS is like dodging and burning in darkoom days to enhance the image :) you can also radically change it but enhancing a image is the start :)
