Can you run Garmin Maps on a laptop or iOS device without owning a Garmin GPS?

Have you tried running garmin mapsource? Its an older version of software that supports live tracking. You will also need gpsgate to convert your signal. I used to run this setup with a small usb gps puck.

    Anyone installed a Kenwood 281 in-dash?

I did use nylon spacers and longer mounting screws. For the bezel I just left it open. Hardly noticable from an angle, straight on you can see it. I have a pic somewhere. (or I should just go snap another)

    $40 BaoFeng UV-5R Dual-Band Handhelds

This ram x-grip, coupled with the handheld mic, and a magnet mount antenna (Comet M-24M) works pretty well. I mainly use it for APRS with my phone and aprs droid.

    Oruxmaps with garmin img files

Create a folder on your desktop, Named for the state or map pack your uploading. Drag all the .img files into that files. Then plug your phone or tablet in, and transfer the files into the oruxmaps > mapfiles folder. Restart the app and then select the map folder under the offline maps category...

Yes, I run this and it works well. The maps dont display as well as they do on a garmin device, but are still good and useable.

    Garmin base camp

Kind of bridging two worlds. There are programs for using your 60c as the gps device, and mapping on a laptop. I dont think basecamp supports live tracking at all. Android or Apple tablets wouldnt run programs like BaseCamp, there might be a windows based tablet that will though. Most new...

[Android] Back Country Navigator vs. Gaia GPS vs. Trimble Outdoor Naviagtor??

I use garmin topo maps, they don't render perfectly, but they are vector based, so they take up very little storage. To download one of the online maps for offline use. First open the map you want to use, the zoom out to show the entire area you want to download. Hit the Map button on the top...

Building a mobile mast for 2M use.

what about PVC conduit? It already had the ends meant to slip fit together. I have a piece of 1-1/4 from a project and it seems fairly rigid.

[Android] Back Country Navigator vs. Gaia GPS vs. Trimble Outdoor Naviagtor??

Did you have the GPS on? I've had that happen before when scrolling around just looking at stuff. But when using the GPS it hasn't failed to load. I have had it leave a tile blank until the middle point of the screen reached it, then it loaded.

    Best tablets for navigation?

oruxmaps,(free) then load in the garmin maps (also free) for the states your going through. That way your covered wherever you go with out having to cache anything. I use it all the time and it works really well. It doesn't do turn by turn, or any real road navigation though.

[Android] Back Country Navigator vs. Gaia GPS vs. Trimble Outdoor Naviagtor??

I've updated, those are just old screenshots. Still liking this app, and I use it all the time. I used it last week for finding a waypoint with no trail to it. Middle of the desert kind of thing. When I got within 300 ft or so, it started calling out distance to waypoint. I wasn't expecting...
