    XJ sleeping dimensions

Agreed. Remove rear seat, slide passenger seat as far forward as possible, fill footwell until it's level, sleep diagonally. It's acceptable for a couple nights but nothing great. Isn't good for couples, even if she's a lot smaller. Dogs work fine if they're good at curling up around your feet.

What pickup + camper to buy can you advise me for a travel through USA ( from France)

Also, in California, the market is great for buying 1976-88 trucks. Anything pre-1975 doesn't need a smog test so that jacks up the value. The general poor performance and gas mileage of the engines limits the prices of the late 70s and 80s trucks. I'd get the truck and camper separately. If...

What pickup + camper to buy can you advise me for a travel through USA ( from France)

Don't listen to the people who advise you to rent an RV. Fly into California and buy there (or one of the other desert states). Don't take a chance on rust. You can get a decent truck for $2000-3000. Use Craigslist to find it.

500-lb capacity hitch rack from Harbor Freight

Just get a $20 hitch stabilizer. They work great to eliminate the side to side motion. The haulers are convenient for carrying extra stuff (firewood, coolers, etc) but, as noted earlier, they absolutely ruin your departure angle.

    on-board air

My compressors have always had the quick disconnect on the compressor. That's the normal way. If you keep yours as is, you'll need a hose with quick disconnects on each end. You might also want to make a male-male coupler so you can use other people's gear.

    Dodge 4x4 RV

It's after Labor Day... did you make it? I am very interested in the 4x4 setup. I've got a '73 Dodge Class C, along with two B series vans that I'd really like to convert. If you have any info on the parts, or maybe some pics of the underside, it would be appreciated.

are two 5 lb propane tanks enough? do you ever run out?

About the propane exchange... you're generally getting 15 pounds in a 20 pound tank like calicamper said. The time when tank exchanges are great is when your tank is expired. They will take an expired tank and give you a good one (albeit, one with only 15 pounds of propane in it). I didn't...

    OBD2 bluetooth readers..

Another +1 for the ELM reader and Torque on an Android phone. My Jeep has a very basic dash with no tach and idiot lights instead of gauges for the oil and coolant. I use Torque as a tach and to monitor water temp and oil pressure and didn't have to bother with swapping the dash and sensors...

    Base camp and Scouting rigs...

I use a fullsize 1973 Dodge van to flat tow my Samurai out to camping sites. Neither of them are ideal for very long expeditions but the combo is perfect for a 4-5 day trip within California. A couple motorcycles fit in the van with no problem and once they are unloaded, the van becomes the...

    Samurai from rocks to Expedition

Nice Sami! I'm always happy to see a few more of these things on the forum. Are you planning sleeping in it or taking a tent?

    Samurai as Daily Driver?

I don't daily mine but I completely agree with everyone else... when you do drive, it's an adventure. Driving a Samurai is what Expedition Portal should be about.
