    iPad and Navigation

Here's some numbers to give you a ballpark idea. The Nat Geo set for Colorado is on 7 CD's - and I think it can fit on 1 DVD. So 4-8 Gigs. They are compressed and not super hight resolution. The original geotiff files I think run about 13 Gigs (again, for colorado). I asked about the...

    Apple Tablet: iPad

Does look nice. Also check out the clearance section of the apple store. iPad 1 is on a decent discount, and refurb prices reflect this too. Has anyone tried mapbox for the iPad? I made some tiles but wondering how they perform on the iPad. (I dont have one). I can make some topo maps for...

    Mac GPS satellite navigation software

You might also take a look at Garmins mac software - it has come a long way. I'm not sure any of them does live tracking. I'm thinking a gps enabled iPad is the best way to go, though I've thought a bit about the other solution mentioned here - mac mini with USB touch screen. Though ultimately...

    Apple Tablet: iPad

I'm not sure what maps gaia uses for South America. I guess it depends on what you want for international. The ArcGIS for iOS has a world topo map that's nice, but offline access isnt there (I think). Another app might be the pdf maps app, which can display geopdfs you download either...

    Apple Tablet: iPad

I kind of doubt they will release early (It would be nice since I'm waiting for gen 2 before I think about getting one). I don't think they deviate from their release cycles much. They don't seem to compare themselves to others - they don't necessarily want huge market share. I read this...

    Bad Elf GPS for Ipad...

My question is, not to get anyone riled up... If you are using a topo maps app, which has a resolution of 4-8 feet per pixel, how does the more accuracy of the gps help? I mean, part of the point of using a tablet is to be able to see more map and get better context of the area so you can make...

Geospatial PDF App for Apple iOS

Google did reveal they have a tablet in the works. I think Motorola was making the hardware and google said that it would run android 3. Supposed to be out middle of 2011. http://www.pcworld.com/article/212725/google_demos_motorola_tablet_running_android_30.html Of course, not much info.

Ugh, need new rain jacket, can't decide

I have this jacket. I live in Colorado, it hasn't rained since I got it. But I wanted a jacket that wasnt as heavy as my 11 year old NF Kitchatna and much simpler. I like the construction and it works for me. My wife uses a cloudveil rain jacket and it's still going strong after 4 years or so...

Really Cool Jeep Water Cross Video

I remember some really cool Creek* crossing videos from the last frontier fourwheeling club in Alaska. Basically Jeeps crossing fast moving water and sometimes getting carried a little by the current. Their site used to be http://www.northern4x4.com/jeepnfool/ and then it moved a few times...

Somebody please talk me down (VW bus lust)

Just spent a while talking to my dad, and he echoed the same thing. His words were among the lines of "I'll never own another volkswagon" He too - dealt with many problems. The last one he owned was a '73 bus. He said something about starter motor, clutch cable, broken valve heads, nervous...

Alcohol Stoves in Central & South America

A friend of mine spent a couple months in SA with his tuna can stove. He seemed to always fine dn alcohol to burn...perhaps I should say he always found some fuel to burn in his stove (which is a dn alcohol stove by design, created by a couple tuna cans and coat hanger wire).

Homemade Snorkel Build for an XJ

I do remember reading that the ARB safari snorkel has a water trap built in, much like what was mentioned on the Montero. It seems like you could build one of those in somewhere under the hood one you figure out how it would work.

'89 YJ for sale in NW Georgia

Are you sure it doesn't have the ax-5? ax-15 was a 6cyl tranny while the ax-5 was for the 4cyl. It's still plenty strong for the 4 cyl.

    Laptop Based GPS Software options?

I guess another Raster/Vector issue... Are Delormes maps "smart" as Chris mentioned or are they just data being rendered? Keep in mind, the data has varying levels of accuracy. The USGS maps were made from surveys (people on the ground), and the other data made via more modern techniques...
