A visit to Pilgrim Restorations in Costa Rica

If any of you is able to contact Paul PLEASE let me know. I've been trying since the photo of my LV was posted to try to contact him to finish the project but it seems he's skipped the country with all the parts for the LV!

    Border crossing Mauritania/Senegal

Not necessarily! We entered Senegal in March 2013 with a 1982 Toyota Land Cruiser. We had obtained a lassez-passier ahead of time at the Senegalese Consulate in Freetown, Sierra Leone. It might have been different for us as we have an ECOWAS registration on our vehicle.

What kind of Land Cruiser is this?

"70 series troopy but it looks like a gasser instead of the much more desirable diesel.

    FJ60 Must-do Reliability Modifications?

The only thing I can think of is the potential tranny/transfer oil leak that overfills one while starving the other.

    1988 LC QUESTIONS

The only way rust like that can happen without the frame being bad is if the rear quarter drain hole was plugged from day one. Not a likely possibility.

    1988 LC QUESTIONS

Rust hides in the back half of the frame specifically around where the tube that carries the rear shocks attaches to the frame. If that area is clean then likely you really do have a rust free sample.

Handling Rough and Washboarded Roads at Speed

75kph on potholed roads aired down sounds like a tire salesman's dream!! Here in Africa where badly potholed roads are pretty standard there are folks who are simply drivers that blast down the road and the vehicle owners pay for new tires and suspension repairs or you take your time and enjoy...

Removal = a complete teardown. There is NO other way. Get the shop manual.

    Lifts: Expedition behavior

Along the same lines as Christo. If you do a lift do it RIGHT! Don't skip this and minimize that to save a few pennies, you WILL regret it in worse handling and maintenance. As the second poster alluded to, castor correction. I did a lift on my old FJ55 and had the wrong castor correction...

    105 spotted...

Ambi doors don't make it a '105. The solid front axle does. You might be able to import a '105 but try to find one that isn't butchered is a whole other problem!

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

Not disputing that roads are safer today than 50 years ago but it is also a lot to do with the roads, regulations and all those things too. I think the vehicle itself, 50 years ago, was a much stronger machine, I didn't say reliable, I said stronger. They were also serviceable in your driveway...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

I'd like to see just how offset that collision is and I'd like to see it from the other side. It's not a direct frontal crash. If it's set for the 2009 to miss the frame rails of the 1959, (remember the frame rails are probably 18" or more in from the side of the vehicle) then the '2009 will...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

I am chuckling a little about the debate of old vs. new. For the U.S. market the new vehicles may be better but this is an overlanding and expedition website where some of us get outside of the lower 48. Take you're shiny new computer controlled vehicle to a mechanic in Latin America and...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

I've occasionally thought of buying a Land Cruiser pickup while we are here in Sierra Leone, going over it with the intent of fixing all the issues which will be there on any used vehicle in a country like Sierra Leone and then when we do finally return to Canada, bring the pickup along. I...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

A lot depends on where you're running it at. Get the RPM's up and down goes the fuel economy. If the right foot gets heavy and the speeds climb, down goes the fuel economy. Keep the RPM's down around 2000 and the speed around 50 - 55 mph and it does quite good. When I had 30mpg it was a...

Seeking Cruiser mechanic in Sacramento/Roseville area

I'll bet the dealer would if you write up the deal and make it contingent on passing either Mudrak or Georg having a look at it. Just make SURE you write it up so that you have an "out" if Mudrak of Georg say it's got issues. Make it say something along the lines of "contingent on passing...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

My 1982 BJ60 has returned a measured 30+mpg and regularly returns 25+mpg on the highway. It may not be the fastest vehicle on the road but it gets me where I want to go and it is still, 30 years on, easier on fuel than the new comparable vehicle! The newer 1HZ engines are not as easy on fuel...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

Been there done that with my manual tranny BJ60 Land Cruiser from Guatemala to Vancouver B.C. in 2008 I think. I wrote it up in Toyota Trails and they printed it. I had to actually look at the pedals to be sure the cast only hit the clutch and not the brake!! Made an interesting drive. My...

Future Toyota 4x4s for the US Market

The auto vs. manual debate is not really part of this thread but being someone who ventures outside of the Conus I prefer manual all the way. Most of the rest of the world does too. There are plenty of advantages to the manual that for me at least far outweigh the lack of shifting gears...
