I like the Montero, but they stop making the 2dr variant for the North American market, and the older 2drs are a bit harder to locate, and some of the ones I have seen are a bit over priced too. As for the rav4, would the 2dr, or 4dr be a better starting point? Also would the better starting...

How do they know you have a diesel in your 4R, is the noise that gives it away, well at least at parking lots and and stop lights?

While the Gen2 pathfinder may have a better motor option the gen1 is a better platform as it is body on frame, with a stronger rear axle. I am not too fond of the Montero Sport, but do like the older 2dr Montero. How easy would it cost to put lockers on a rav4? Would the newer Camary 4cylinder...

Stock Freelander trans? Sorry to jack the thread OP. Would be glad to see how far you can really go on the stock motor.

For a swap like that you wouldn't use the VW trans? I know from what I read the stock trans is not that good on the Freelander, which is a real surprise to me that the op got a one in working shape for such a good deal.

Interesting, kind of silly to call it a different model if its just lifted. Now if they added say a rear lockers too then maybe I could see the justification of a different name. So no mechanical difference or motor options(well beside the Impreza offering a WRX model). Maybe you can tell this...

So that is just a regular impreza wagon and not a outback sport? Is there a difference between the two when it comes to off-roading?

Well I am not sure if I would be doing huge rocks(but pebble size ones, yes), and mud I would like to do as much as I can, and I am sure a snorkel would help out a bit there too, no?

How is the on-road handling of the Freelander, is it sporty(as in like the RR Sport or Evoque) or still suv like? As for the TDI swap, how much tq is the stock TDI making vs this, and would the engine be lighter?

Dang. So then I guess I have to wait until I can afford something like the Porsche Cayenne(non-GTS) or maybe even Touareg as they seem to be a lager spiritual successors to the VX. :(

You think that is confusing, take a look at Toyota's suv/crossover options it is not much better. In crossovers you have: Rav4 Venza Highlander The Rav4 and Highlander both come with a 3rd row options. While the Venza and Highlander are both Camry based, and both start around the same price...
