Interesting that you're in the Southeast. I had a 1st gen Monty from 1992 - 99. I bought it in Denver (where Monteros were fairly common) and then drove it to Fort Bragg, NC, where I was to be stationed with the Army.
When I was in NC, I got a lot of stares, and a couple of times people actually came up to me and said "What is that thing?" There were a few SWB Monty's around (but they were few and far between) but these folks had never seen a LWB Monty before. It made me feel like a celebrity!
My '90 was a 5 speed with no AC. I still shake my head when I think that I lived in NC from 1992 - 1998, 6 hot Carolina summers, without AC!
Mine had the notorious valve guide problem that neccessitated a top end rebuild, but she never left me by the side of the road in 7 years and 127,000 miles. It is still the vehicle I owned for the longest period of time and the vehicle I put the most miles on, by far.
