Kiddmen,

Google 'elevator screw'.

This may suit your needs for a low profile attachment for a Ram Mount.

Also If you are definite on RAM mounts, you can save a little cash by just getting the generic balls threaded for 1/4x20. I grabbed mine off ebay by searching "25mm Dia Solid Black Plastic Ball Lever Knobs for Machine Tools" They are actually the knobs for graders/80's arcade games/metal press and brake/drill press but as a RAM 'b' size is 1 inch Diameter, there is a lot out there that will fit it beautifully. These don't have the thin rubberized coating that RAM has, but for something as light as a radio, it will certainly do the trick.

Awesome! I'll check that out. Thanks.

Spent the afternoon making a proof of concept for mounting not only the radio, but any electronic or other accessories one would want.

It's a 1" bar running across the dash of my jeep. I made steel standoffs that thread onto existing studs under the too of the dash.

I also modified some 1" rifle scope mounts I had lying around to clamp the tube.

I read the whole thread and I'm in! Need recommendation on what radio/accessories on Amazon to get since there are quite a few listed.

UV-5R, UV-5R+, or UV-82?

Without debating details in making this decision, the only thing I'd suggest is that you need a better antenna than the OEM stump that comes on any of these radios. A nice little whip that's still a manageable size is very inexpensive and means the difference between getting through or not. I bought a medium one and a larger one (14") when I got my radio, and find that the 14" version is not too long at all, so it's on there all the time.

If I were using mine as my only mobile radio (i.e., mounted part-time in the rig) I would definitely run coax to a roof-mount antenna, even if only a magnetic mount model.

These mounts won't fit the UV-82 will they???

I have no idea. Unlikely, but you never know. If the clip were the same but the body were wider, you could un-bend the side tabs a bit possibly

It depends on what the intent is. I have 3 units myself.

One has the extended battery and the 14" antenna as my hiking unit

Then I have a basic unit in the jeep mounted with an external mag mount antenna and a speaker mic

Then I have a 3rd unit which is the basic handheld ($30) that I give out to others to use when out and about.

I'd also highly recommend getting the programming cable to use with CHIRP software. Makes programming channels and repeaters super easy.

I've converted 5 people to HAM using these little radios. On our last outing we were communicating clearly with 4 miles of separation through rolling hills and valleys, even when I was down in a canyon. I was pretty impressed. Plus FM clarity is far far far better than AM you get with Crappy Band (CB).
