Good to hear.

Should I double seal it just in case? :p

Never knew you could. I think I would have and use a remain only cuz a new axle is $$$$.
Please update if new axle fix it. I mean it's the only thing you haven't tired

I am at the point, I am so fed up with it, I am not going to chance another reman.

I just did a bunch of other work to it as well...new alternator, brake booster & master cylinder, ball joints, rebuilt the coilovers, all new bushings in the control arms, redid the rear axle bearings and seals, carrier bearing on the driveshaft went out screwing up the yoke...had that rebuilt and balanced. Oh yeah, valve covers were leaking fixed those too...

So what is another $500? ha! *sigh* With all the repairs/waiting on parts to come in, the truck has been down for 6 weeks...I just want it finished at this point. I still have to take it in to get it aligned and new tires slung on.

Should be pretty fresh feeling after all that.

Think I just dumped nearly $4000 into a truck that is maybe worth $6000 if I am lucky. Beats paying $30K+ for a new one though.
It now has 282K miles on it...with very little repairs before that...this truck has been stellar, so I don't mind keeping it going a little bit longer,
it feels like an old friend now. It just needed some TLC.

It's worth maintain an older vehicle vs a new one.
I meant if I knew you could double the seal. I would have double than use a reman. But your already got a new one coming. Plus I understand it's frustrating trying to repair it right the 1st time and still not fixed.

Price of a new Taco at $30K will maintain a current vehicle for a long time. :) I have had this truck for 12 years...at the point where I want to see how long it will go.

Yeah, I thought of just doubling it up like Kurt said...would be cheaper. I don't plan on selling the truck any time real soon...so I am thinking the longevity of the repairs I am making. If my current reman is at the far end of spec...I would assume it would start leaking again sooner rather than later even with doubling up the seal.

They are letting my apply the cost I already paid of my current axle to the new one...so it should be around another $300. Kinda sucks having to spend all of that money, since it looks like it was the axle all a long. I do think it was a good idea to tear down the diff and inspect it anyways, since it has so many miles on it.

Axle should be here tomorrow...I am going to let the differential shop install it...so it might be down for a couple days.

Fingers crossed. Keeps us updated.

Me too.

Spoke to the diff shop this morning...their faces got a bit long when they saw mine again for the third time. Told them what you guys told me, and how I am getting a new axle, yadda yadda ya...now just waiting on Toyota to call me to tell me it is in, hoping to have it dropped off this afternoon, maybe back by the end of the day tomorrow.

This is the gift that keeps on giving.

So the new axle came in today... I have my truck by the way, I go to go pick it up...they said I need to bring the old one in before I can get the new one...ahh...this is the only vehicle I have today, can't I bring it to you after we put the new one in? Nope...ok well crap...so I'll just get a ride home from the differential shop when I drop the truck off so they can pull the axle....can't find a ride...I'll just have to ride my bicycle then, then go back tomorrow morning...I walked in the door from the bicycle ride home... the phone rang, diff shop had the axle pulled...out the door before they close in 30 minutes...girlfriend is home at this point. I can run over now in our Trooper...made it. *whew*

Over to Toyota in morning, and back the diff shop.

Not to mention we both have been extremely busy...work has been nuts, I am trying to get my house prepped to put on the market, the girl friend is doing her thesis art install. Trying haul sticks of steel from the supply house and lumber for her project kinda sucked in the Trooper. I broke the windshield hauling 12' 2X6's,had to slam on the brakes, some Prius driver with a Coexist bumper sticker cut me off...

A week before the Tacoma went down we sold our 3rd vehicle....this last month and a half has been nuts to say the least.

Oh man. I have been there. It seems like when all the vehicles are running at my house, there's never a crisis, but as soon as one goes in the shop, I pull one apart, and the wife goes to work, the one I plan to use for parts runs or errands decides to do something funky.

So did the new axle do the trick?

Murphy's Law...I am keeping a good humor about it all, about all you can do...no reason to get pissed. Though on the way home turning the bicycle into a massive headwind...I am like "really!?"...

We have had vehicles go down before...but maybe for a week.

Going on 7 weeks here...this is getting ridiculous....missing that 3rd vehicle big time! Pretty sure we are going to get another when we move to Idaho this summer. Don't want
to buy one here, since I don't want to have to ship it up there. One of the reasons we sold the 3rd vehicle...didn't want to deal with moving it.

So did the new axle do the trick?

Don't know yet, ran out of time...since Toyota wouldn't let me have the new axle without the old one, all the running around they were closed by the time I got the old axle. I had to stop by work for an hour too...kinda threw a monkey wrench into todays plan. They open at 8:00 am tomorrow, run over there...then over to the diff shop...by that time my girlfriend drops me off at work...the diff shop said they'll have it done tomorrow, though I am guessing they'll want to test drive it, since this will be the third time working on it...I "might" be done with work in time to get over there before they close tomorrow at 6:00...if not have to wait until Thursday morning to pick it up. Which I hope that isn't the case...my girlfriend needs the Trooper early in the morning to do some minor tweaks on her thesis install...since that is opening night of the gallery show.

When it rains it pours...

Huh. This seems to be more and more common.

I have this exact same issue, and am planning on just doubling up the seals. I'll be curious to see if the new axle does the trick. I'm so frustrated with it, and so sick of pulling the axle out to replace the seal. I've done 6 seals, with NAPA and OEM axles, and its still leaking, just like yours. I've even tried setting it to different depths to put the seal on a different spot, in the hopes that there was just a slight depression where the remanned axle had been riding on its previous seal. No luck.

Anyway, I feel your pain. I hope this fixes it for you. I'm curious, because I was also told that I couldn't get a new axle any more, but was it the pt number posted in the thread?

I just dropped it off at the diff shop...will know later today. Told them to double the seal for "just in case". But I'll leave it up to them. I bought two seals from Toyota...one was different, it had grease already on it, the other didn't and none of the other seals we tried had grease from the factory either. Same part number too...

One of my moto buddies had a good idea, what he does to fork seals...take the spring off and take a 4-5 coils out the female end of it...said it really tightens up the seal.

Another friend said he had the same problem with a Ford, they ran a couple bead welds around it, then turned it down on a lathe....not something you should have to do with new axle though.

Was able to pick up the truck before I had to go into work...the shop is only 2 miles from my place of business...so haven't had a chance to drive it.

The new axle is 0.006 of an inch bigger, BTW. Used the seal that came with the grease.

So far, so good. No leak.

Drove it around for about an hour and a half, took it up on the highway for a bit to get it good and hot.

Sounds good. Most axle seals i used from Toyota have a bit of grease on them. Not a big deal if not. One trick i do is put some trans grease on the spring before installing it. The hammering of seal can knock the spring out of place. Again it's an old trick an old tech told me long time ago and I just do it lol

Yea we measured an aftermarket and like 2 remans till the new one came. The new one was bigger and sealed right up.
