i have been looking at gear ratios for running 35-37's on the explorer, and i am liking 4.88's with a 1354 transfer case doubler.

by using the stock tranny and tcases everything will be nice and light. my only concern is the auto holding up to the job. planning on getting a bigger tranny cooler and a fan just for that cooler. already running synthetic tranny fluid.

found a friend with a tubing bender. i have ideas for a cage in the rear incorporating shock hoops. might have to excercise the old paint skills

i need to get my own camera enough of this sharing crap!

so the reason for posting the jana links is because i am considering running a high pinion dana 44 with dana 50 innards, (jana 54) in the front with 8lug outers and chrome moly axles, in the rear a high pinion 60 with dana 70 innards, (jana76) and axles. pretty neat tech in that thread. seems reasonably priced too.

this would give me good ground clearance, and strong reliable axles. granted i would be sacrificing width but it would also add stability and in colorado the full width axles don't seem to be a red flag for getting around.

warning long drawn out story ahead

so with that explained. i have been busy the last couple of nights, with this, http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/64710-ever-get-that-feeling
(for those that don't like to clicky, short version wifes car went bleh in denver while visiting her sister, she's pulling her hair out i am pounding my head against the wall)
, and try to figure out how i am going to deal with the situation.

so it was determined i need to go down to denver to get her when i go on days off. so after i got off my 12 hour shift i started getting the f350 ready. the 35's i have on it are dry rotted a bit so i put the old/new 235/85/r16's back on. well let me rephrase that first i did the rear tires and adjusted the rear brakes so the parking brake would work again, looks like i need new shoes as the left pad is cracked and the drum is chipped, insert head **********. got that done. the other two 235's i had mounted on the front of the suburban so i could move it. so that meant taking the 35's off the f350 and the 235's off the sub. ok f350 first, done, lets tackle the sub. the sub had a bunch of weeds around it and 5 or 6 hornets floating around the front end. great so i grabbed the hornet spray and killed two nests that they had built in the pass door and ran out of spray. still loitering in my work area. dangit. screw it bee stings aren't that bad. so i crouch down to get the jack under the axle and look for more hornet nests, in the process leaning my forearm on a pissed off hornet. mother of willy nelson that hurt! drew blood and everything! time to take a breather.

so i will work on the exhaust on the f350 instead. it has a 4" exhaust with muffler that comes out behind the rear axle. i wanted to have it come out in front of the rear axle, so i could eventually put a bigger tank behind the rear axle. never liked the muffler any way so out it comes, but not with out venting my frustrations on it with a two pound sledge. done. a few creative cuts with the sawzall and i put it back together. lools kinda hokey but it works. time to go back to the tire swap.

i think by this time the bees where asleep or had moved on whatever, still feeling a little twitchy. got the first tires switched around. stepped back to look at my work. insert head ********** here. the wheels i have are directional and i had managed to put the wheel on the wrong side. it was getting late, i was frustrated so i called it a night. i'll fix it tomorrow.

woke up at 500a this morning and the explorer wouldn't start, no clicky nothing. that left the f350. that still needed one more 235, doh. since it was early i got out the 1/2 extended handle ratchet and the 7/8ths socket and went to work after i called in. one hour later i was on the road. the directional wheels looked like a blind man put them on, but i had made it to work.

so the lesson learned was; its the little crappy things that make the good times that much sweeter.

saw this thread on pirate, draggbody made a buggy for his little girl out of a honda vtec drivetrain and sami axles.

giving me ideas. acquire dana 30 for the explorer. gear them to 4.88's run 35's. then when emmmett gets older combine the escort drivetrain and the explorer axles with some 32" tires and some tubing.

need a garage bad:sombrero:

so for any of you with '94 f series trucks the first two are for you. my f350 needed the header panel, headlights, and turn signals needed to be replaced. ford apparently decided this needed to be a complicated task. in order to replace turn signals or turn signal bulbs, it is easiest to do if the wheel wells are removed as each of the turn signals have nuts on them that are underneath the battery trays. the first two screws are located on top can be undone with a screwdriver easy enough.

then there are the two nuts accessed from the wheel well. these pics are taken over the axle in the wheelwell.

on the way to denver from rifle i averaged 19.5 mpg in the f350. pleasant surprise. unfortunately i think the carrier bearing gave out and that needs to be changed now. looks like the rubber cushion deteriorated. bfdiesel and i figured it was the carrier bearing because it only made the noise when the drivetrain was under load. the noise was a metal on metal grinding noise with some vibration as it bounced arount the loose rubber bushing. i will update with explorer pics of the rear bumper mods tomorrow. battery is dying on the laptop. enjoying seattle like weather in august tonight. weird summer.

alright so the rear end lost some weight. and all this fell off. all this being the rear sway bar, spare tire and hoist, lower rear quarters, and a bumper full of dried mud. the spare is going to be carried in the rear until i get a mount made on the bumper.

IMG_2853.JPG

then i tacked this on

IMG_2854.JPG

then welded it solid and added a reciever so i could move my smoker around

IMG_2865.JPG

i have some more changes that i want to make to it when i have time.

and here is a side shot to show the ground clearance gained from the tube bumpers. considering a 1" body lift but only after the suspension has grown a little.

my wife found a sweet onesy for the boy, i thought was pretty cool. expedition ready.

well i got the explorer running again. turns out the battery cables were rotted out. especially the positive one. the starter solenoid was cracked so i replaced it as well. bfdiesel and i went on our monthly camping trip this last weekend and had a ball. we found the road we were attempting to go on last time and bookmarked some great campsites, and did some mild wheeling. i got high centered on a log to test bfdiesels winch, still need to pull that chunk of wood out of the dana 35. dogs had a great time and we had good food. the boys enjoyed the walkies and we saw a lot of beautiful scenery. can't wait to get back out there. any way here is a ton of pics.
