Optimas do not work well for this system (for what ever reason). I have always understood that the Optimas are not great for a charge/discharge set up.
Thanks

Not the Red or Yellow Top; the Blue Top should work fine.
I haven't tried one but am running the Sears group 31 Platinum marine battery now. After a bit more than a year, it's not holding a charge as long as it did new. I used to have access to an Intelligent Battery Tester but not anymore; I'm thinking of getting one for myself and seeing a real measure of this battery's health.
... now I realize that my first week will be camping without electric service...
We do not use a lot of juice while camping... just a fan at night and the 12v light in the tent as we turn in, so it may not even be needed, but my idea seemed easy as a back-up idea....
Some fans draw huge amperage as some lights do.
My LED & fluorescent lights draw almost nothing.
I wouldn't charge the way you're suggesting and I don't think that any inverter would be enough to power a charger for a boat battery.
Have you thought about a gennie? Or a real hook-up like OS-Aussie linked?
