First Gen Ford Expedition

I have learned as all things in life and theology it’s a love hate relationship with many folks. Nothing is designed perfectly IMO the last realist long lasting easy to maintain yourself Ford full size trucks and SUV’s ran from 92 to 97.

I’m the last of a pretty much brand loyal breed. However we do have two imported Germans in our stable.

If you beat on it long enough, twist it hard enough, and rev it high enough sooner or later it will break and develop issues. However not impressed with the build quality on the 17 Expedition EL my girlfriend owns and preferring old and used aka shitboxes. This sounds like the perfect SUV for me!

Ford really missed the boat by not offering a 4dr Bronco, it would have been awesome. And yes I know about the goofy 50' long Centurion thing...

The Expedition replaced the Bronco in Ford’s lineup. While not associated as such, it sort of is a 4 door Bronco. It doesn’t have the iconic removable rear top, but otherwise could easily have been the 4 door iteration of the Bronco. The last Bronco was F-150 based, the 1st gen Expedition is F-150 based.

It kinda sorta is. The body is all one piece as opposed to a pickup that is broke in the middle with the cab and bed being separate. That would put more twist on the body.

It is true that the body is long. But the definition of a monocoque says that chassis points are part of the body- things like engine and suspension/steering mounts would mount to the body. You could take the body off an Expedition and still have a rolling chassis. You can’t do that with a Cherokee.

I think the term “monocoque” was just misused originally.

Based on vastly different versions of the F-150.

Older generation is far more DIY maintenance/modification friendly.

It was but I can kinda see what he was probably getting at.

After that tutorial^^ not sure I'd go with expedition.

It sounds bad but that is 14 years of experience with one and most of my bigger complaints (HVAC system, wheel bearings, coil over plugs) are going to be found on just about everything made in the last 20 years. Nothing will ever be perfect.

I daily drive one, it is a darn good truck. It is stock but is worked like a borrowed mule.

Based on vastly different versions of the F-150.

The 5th gen Bronco (last era of the Bronco) was based on the 9th gen F-150 and was done in 1996. The 10th gen F-150 began in 1997- coincidentally the same year as the first model year of the Expedition.

Vastly different versions of the F-150 for sure, but in lockstep with the generation change.

Something like this but not as long

Yep. That’s a 9th gen based F-150/Bronco/Centurion. In 1997 they went to the 10th gen and they also introduced the Expedition after a one year absence of the Bronco.

I’m looking to build a full size expedition vehicle. I looked at Suburban and Tahoe but went back to my roots Ford. Being cheap and a in a career field with a down season I want to keep it older, used, but still dependable and serviceable.

My target has become the 99 to 02 Ford Expedition In Eddie Bauer trim with a 5.4 and 4.10’s if I can find one geared so.

Now my goal is 33’s, CB, 10K winch, additional lighting, dual battery, high output alternator, roof top tent, and fridge, snorkel as well. Added drawer system for tools, cooking and eating utensils, and recovery gear.

My desire is the ability to go out for a week at a time with myself or up to three plus my dog. I also want this to be serviceable as a daily driver , able to pick my kids up from school, and take me to church.

I’m sure there are some things I have overlooked and forgotten. Please let me know about your experience with this platform and if I’m totally wrong. Thank you.

97 and 98 come with a Borg Warner 4406 transfercase that allows you to run 2wd, 4wd (high and low) and Auto 4wd. 99-2002 are only auto4wd with 4wdHi and Lo switch (unless you do the brown wire mod).

Also, 97 and 98's are the only two years that come with 3.73s stock. The rest of the run are 3.55s. 4.10s would be a unicorn/nonexistent.

And except for the Eddie Bauer trim (unless you do the load assit shocks), they'll fit 35s without issue with a simple torsion bar crank and some longer coils or coil spacers.

Also, check the cruise control relays. They will catch fire. That's how I lost mine.

What do you need to check on them?

There was a TSB/recall on the cruise control on the 10th gen f150/1st gen Expeditions. You have to take it in to Ford to fix.

I never used mine (ever. Really), and it caught fire while it was parked. It had not been run for almost half a day. Just *poof* smoke out of nowhere, and flames. Best guess is the switch or relay turned on, kept sending power, caught the switch by the brake reservoir on fire and that was it.

No, the switch on the brakes for the cruise had constant battery power to it and IIRC the supplier didn’t make the switches right.

Recall was to check switches and if bad replace with updated switch and I think all of them received a pigtail with an inline fuse.

My brother just started working for Ford right out of high school when that went down, my truck was his tutorial for how to do it so I got both the new switch and fuse harness even though my switch wasn’t bad.
