For the hitch, pintle is pretty much the "minimum" everyone here seems to use offroad, and it will work fine. I have and use a Max Coupler. They are a little pricey, but very quiet and no slop when backing up.
been following along .... now that you have made the decision to build a frame and sounds like your going to build and axle ... will all this just sorta slide under the old trailer to beef it up .... or is less and less of the original trailer being used now ????

No, find a buddy that has a larger welder, you are welding 1/4 and 3/16 steel, You can use the hobart for attaching the smaller sheet metal and such.
i am redoing a utility trailer also.
thanks, i was pricing out some aluminum sheets last night it doesn't seem to be too much more $ than steel but probably worth it in the long run.Reduce the weight by using aluminum.
yeah i did some more research and found a homemade 3 axis hitch i want to build i just need to go get the parts and find some shop time heres a link it look just like the max coupler but sans the $200 price tag http://tventuring.com/trailerforum/thread-65.htmlFor the hitch, pintle is pretty much the "minimum" everyone here seems to use offroad, and it will work fine.
