Hot camp shower

I have been looking at the Big Kahuna unit too in the "Big Kahuna" thread, and I just now saw this Hot Camp Shower in Cabela's camping catalog.

Looking at the one burner model.

It uses a single (also a double tank model) propane cylinder to heat the water from a creek/river, or the case it packs in as it holds 4 gallons.

Thoughts on this unit compared to the Kahuna?
This one is only about $40 more.

We bought the single burner unit a couple of years ago. It worked great on our first trip. On our second trip, the pump made lots of noise but did not pump any water. We called the company, but the pump is not covered by their warranty. I took it apart, could not find anything amiss, put it back together, and it still does not work. We have not used the thing since.

Reliable, go ZODI EXtreme.

Just used one last weekend. Worked great. Super reliable bug sprayer. Major browny points with the wife :sombrero: (oh yeah and i liked it too)

Do a search and you'll pull up a ton of Extreme users.

I've been thinking of getting the Zodi Extreme and using it with a Paha Que enclosure.

Those of you running similar setups, do you keep the water heater in the enclosure or outside of it? Just wondering how it works with the Extreme where you have to manually pump it up for pressure.

You keep the Zodi outside, but run the hose and shower head through a small access sleeve on the tent. Prime the can 3 or 4 times and it generally will stay pressurized enough for a quick shower.

One time the Ms. hollered out to me to prime it a little more for her. I had to put down my beer, but we got her all set.

It's as simple as can be and the warm water is always great for cleaning up, but don't kid yourself. It's still the equivalent of showering with a kitchen sink sprayer.

I give another nod to the Zodi Extreme, I did a write up on making the shower head better, and eliminating the need to hand pump it. It works great! I have also use this in my shower enclosure with no problems. My enclosure is big and has plenty of room to keep it away from the walls.

Here is the write up: http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12422

Thanks for the replies.

Great writeup James.
I did see the Extreme model too in Cabela's catalog.
I will have to look into it more.

Here is an elcheapo video I made of the shower in action after I heated the water.
You can easily use the cooker to cook with a big pot of grub on it too.

Using the shower is easy.
Use a match or one of those barbecue matches with the butane ( I own several) and crank open the gas valve and light.
Adjust the flame, and put the tank of water on top.

Make sure the pump handle is out, or you are looking for trouble.
There is a temperature strip on the side of the tank that shows the water temperature.
They say to heat it to about 100 degrees.
I only let it run for about four minutes or so, and I got tap water from the sink up to about 70 degrees.

After it is heated, you take the tank off the heater and set it on the ground.
Insert the hand pump, and pump away.
I charged it up to around thirty pumps or so.

Then you flip the red valve on the tank, and you have water coming out of the shower head.
Pretty cool.
Will be doing a change of the shower head at a future date.

I let the water run for awhile, then I stopped the flow and pumped it up again.
2.5 gallons is not going to go very far, so it would be best to get wet, turn the water off and lather up, then turn the water back on to rinse off.

Looks like it will do the job.

Please excuse the cheesy video, but it gives you an idea of the water spray/pressure the stock head puts out.

I normally work on vids too with my desktop, but this time I tried Windows Movie Maker on my new laptop with Vista.
Movie Maker has a few more options than the one with XP, and it worked out well.

End video was saved to a DVD widescreen format at around 27 MB, then uploaded to the Tube.

And yes, my table on the porch needs cleaning :D
Same tree that drips pitch onto the FJ is also over the table.

PS, looking for female models so I can shoot a better video of the shower in action on my next camping trip.

I picked up a Zodi Hot Man Fire Coil on Friday from the local outdoors store. Apparently it was discontinued several years back and they didn't realize they had it.

Anyway, we used it over the weekend and it worked great. You just hook up two water jugs, or in our case a water jug and a solar shower. Place the jugs at different elevations, place the copper coil in the coals of the fire and turn on the water. It took us two passes throught the coil to heat it up to where we liked it.

Unfortunatly, after doing a search, I was not able to fine any additional information.
