Hot Dogs

Their Fearless Franks are forgettable but their sausages, Spicy Italian, Sweet Italian and Chorizo are quite good.

I'm not going to lie: I love a hot dog cooked over a campfire. Maybe it brings me back to my childhood; I don't know. However, we almost always bring 'em with us when camping.

I also love the Hebrew National dogs.

Also, having married into a German household (as in my wife is first generation), I've had all kinds of different wurst. I love weisswurst, bratwurst, Knackwurst, and a Polish Kiełbasa, too.

I highly recommend Aidell's Chicken Applewood sausages, too.

Excellent, is she coming to the Washington Rally? Have her bring extra of whatever she cooks! haha

I get really good Polish food from the grandparents over in New Jersey, the Kielbasa and Perogies they can get are amazing.

It sounds like you guys are turning the Washington Rally into the Wurst Expedition ever... :D [insert rimshot here]

My wife and my boys love hot dogs and I'll eat one every now and then, but I'm more of a sausage guy myself. I slow cook 'em over indirect heat, usually with hickory as the fuel, and with a spicy dry rub applied. I've tried all kinds of store bought sausages as well as those from fancy local butchers in the Seattle area. The thing is, we like Johnsonville Spicy Italian Sausage and Brats the best for this kind of preparation. They are extremely juicy and they provide a fairly simple canvas that seems to work really well with this preparation... and since I make this particular kind of sausage A LOT we're pretty much a Johnsonville family (accept when it comes to spaghetti and other Italian dishes with sausage).

I assume you go to Salumi? I've been trying to get there for a couple years, the stars never align just right. I have had pizza with their sausage on it, mmmmm.

I am sorry. I can not take any article serious that does not mention even one of a million of New Jersey's great Texas Wieners. Chili (greek style, ala skyline), onions, deli mustard. Natural casing, mmmm mmm good!

To our Vegan friends, I've had contact with the food industry through out my career. If you think a hot dog is gross under construction, you should see soy products, just different sides of the same coin!

And here is a summary of a Cook's Illustrated article searching for the best store bought hot dogs (large production volume brands, of course). I always use Hebrew National, but Nathan's are good too. In general, the kosher brands seem to be of higher quality.

Of course, your local butcher may have some very good ones, too.

Which hot dogs do you enjoy, if at all, on your adventures?

I like Nathan's, Hebrew National and Oscar Meyer, not in that order. Nathan's has more garlic, Hebrew National tastes perfect and Oscar Meyer reminds me of when I was a kid. Dodger Dogs aka the all beef ones from Farmer John are good too, especially with garlic fries. http://unvegan.com/reviews/the-dodger-dog/

I pretty much avoid all other brands and hate the chicken/pork/beef or any dog that's not all beef. You get what you pay for with hot dogs.

I'm not vegan for ethical, cleanliness, or "gross" reasons; it's entirely for health.
I've seen the inside of my arteries via fluoroscopic imaging.
I've had my heart attacks. Not doing that again...

For anyone who doesn't like hotdogs because how they are made is disgusting, go watch how they grow a steak, it stands in a field crapping covered with flies, pork is much worse. Pork rolls in it and loves to be covered in it! Makes me hungry for pork skins!

Fairbury hotdogs are great. Red skin, all beef. But, you will only find them in the Midwest. They are a Nebraska hotdog.
