How to kill an XJ in one easy step!

Bummer about your XJ, man. I hope they're right and it's no biggie. We fixed SpamtheFood's Tacoma on the trail next to the river he hydrolocked in. Pull plugs, crank over engine, reinstall, attempt start up.

Inspect oil now! Go home from work if you must. As others said - water in the engine is something you only leave in there for a few minutes. Ok, maybe I'm being overly dramatic but the inside of an engine is the worst place for water as the rust happens fast.

Pull the dip stick and look at the oil. If it looks like a chocolate milk shake you have water in the oil (also a good blown head gasket test).

Regardless of what you see on the dip stick pull the plugs and crank it over to see what happens. Water will either shoot out of it or it won't. Then you'll know if the engine was hydro-locked or not.

K&N filters have no place on a road vehicle. They are complete and total crap at filtering anything and as you found open element filters are a bad idea in general. A bad splash ruined your week.

I'm scheduled to get off work at 3:00 this afternoon and it is just after noon, and I really should hang around because today is the teacher work day before summer break so its kind of a bustling day, but chances are they will be here most of the week so I'll see if I can get out of here in the next hour or so and start getting it dried up.

I'm leaving in about 15 or 20 minutes to head home and get that cleared and drained, and then I'm hitting the catalogs to find a replacement air box to get rid of my K&N. Hopefully I don't have bent rods or anything, that would complicate the project.

I just don't see any way of a giant, engine-stalling amount of water being able to get up there from the looking at those pics.

sorry if i'm repeating, but don't have time to read through all...

the water is not even deep enough for the air intake and with a bit of movement and a wake even less. i went through water deep enough to splash over the hood without a snorkel without issues...
maybe another water related problem. (?)

good luck on the find and the fix!

a new engine wouldn't be terribly expensive, though...

ya sounds to me like and electrical issue which could be good and bad. sometimes it takes forever to track down the cause. to be safe though pull the plugs and jumpstart/crank it to blow the water out if there is any. then start looking at things like the alternator since they dont like water. i dont c the maf being the issue unless the water was slimy and dirty, but it looks pretty darned clean to me.

Water could have been higher that night and with the current coming from the driver side water could easily be pushed up in the air box with the help from the current.

I kind of think that water got up into my stupid open K&N air filter, if I had had the stock airbox or a snorkel I might have been better off. But the batter died real fast so there is definitely an electrical gremlin in there some where.

I took advantage of a break in the weather yesterday to get started working on fixing it, and the weather was great while I was driving into town to get some oil and filter and all that stuff.....but was pouring rain when I got home. The power was out for about 3 hours too so I couldn't even charge my battery. Hopefully things will work better this time around.

And as a side note, any recommendations on how to spiffy up my interior? I know I'll be throwing away the carpet and doing some sort of rust preventive bed liner type of thing, so are there recommendations for roll on or spray on solution? Also, do you think just steam cleaning my seats will be enough to get the funk out?

You might check your local auto recyclers for some Grand Cherokee seats. Nice upgrade. If you don't mind a little fab work, a pair of buckets from a wrecked Boy Racer rally car like a Sube WRX, Saturn Ion R, Lancer Evo etc would be nice.

Steam cleaning your seats should work. A few years ago I had left the top down on my Mustang and a stray severe thunderstorm hit and soaked the interior. I came back to find 4" of water in the foot wells and everything soaked. The worst part was my interior wreaked of fish from Lake Erie. I managed to take out the seats and carpet out and I shampooed them and let them dry and they were as good as new (if not cleaner).

Quick update: I do have water in my cylinders, I pulled a couple spark plugs and looked in with a flash light and could see liquid inside there. I also checked my old oil and it appears to be fine, nothing out of the ordinary just dirty and old (been about 5000 miles since last change so it is time for that any way). I got the battery off and checked the voltage and it was just barely over 6 volts so it is on the charger right now. Hopefully once that is charged I can pull all the plugs and turn it over and get the water out!
