In the market for a full size diesel truck

Okay, let me refine my requirements...It needs to be newish and I do not want to mod it or get and old truck so I can put a different engine in it. I have an off-road vehicle that I wrench on. I don't need another one. This one will also pull heavy farm equipment. Doubt I will put a lift on it, but I will probably upgrade the tires and shocks. I won't have much of a payment if any.

Oh sorry, C-U-M-M-I-N-S ... TO be honest, I knew that. Just don't know why I didn't type it that way.

first - it's cummins not cummings. sorry that just drives me batty

second - i would stick with what i am hoping mine to be in a few years. obs ford crewcab 12valve p-pump cummins, eaton fuller fso6406a 6 speed, twin stick np205, dana 80 rear with disc brakes and arb, shackle reversal upfront, 3.54 gears, king pin dana 60 front with an arb.

but i like to tinker, and the newer truck with their accompanying payments don't appeal to me.

Wow.

I had a 2002 Ford F350, 7.3, 6spd that I bought new. I bought an '07 Duramax (in my sig) used. Guess which one is gone? I liked the Ford and it was a great truck that did everything I asked, but the Chevy is so much nicer to drive and of course the max/ali combo is incredible.

I tell everyone that asks me about which truck to buy, go drive them all and then decide what works for YOU.

Yeah, I will more than likely go the duramax/allison combo. Just have to figure out if I should go new or used. Any idea on what year models were best?

I'd vote for 06...last year no emissions stuff...first year of 6 spd Alli...365hp/650 ft/lbs

Don't forget the early '07 Classic's either. The '07.5 is when the emission stuff and body style changed. But I agree, I did a lot of research and most everyone will agree that the '06-'07 LBZ/6spd is it, which is what I bought when I was looking.

I agree, if money is not a concern. If it is, there could be other options.

I am sure all the new trucks drive great and have fabulous interior the GM/allison combo especially.

I still prefer a manual though for heavy towing.

I understand fully the benefits of using a manual over an automatic for towing. I just don't like to change clutches at all. I used to be a GMC light/ medium duty truck tech and it wasn't too often a duramax/ allison powered truck had to be repaired unless the customer did something outlandish. I remembered when a guys wife decided she put gasoline in his duramax.... Oh, he was mad. The truck had 4,000 miles on it.

Land Rover is no longer owned by Ford, Land Rover and Jaguar were sold sold to Tata in 2008.

Wasn't the Dodge Ram division of Dodge bought by Tata as well? I think that's why the new trucks are called, "RAM" and are no longer referred to as "Dodge Ram".

As stated before, drive all three, and see what you like. The Dodge would be my 1st choice, but only because I don't trust Fords engines of late, and it is too early to tell on the newest attempt. GMs are going to ride the best, but with the least ground clearance. You have a dedicated off-roader though, so does that matter? My brother in law just got a new GM last week. Maybe I should do some "research" for you...

Aside from your spec of eaton fuller, I am right there with you! I sold my obs crew with sky offroad shackle reversal, and man do I miss that truck. I am actively shopping for one now. 12v going in when the sun shines again. P or VE pump are both fine. Either way, a fun truck!

Had a Duramax, driving a Cummins-powered Dodge now. The Allison was nice, but the 48RE is holding up just fine @ 81K. Price replacing eight injectors in a Dmax and get back to me...
