Garmin 60CSx on RAM mount

I cannot take credit for this, but I did modify it for a 1st Gen. Here is the original: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/49166-Garmin-60CSx-Mount-in-05-Tacoma

Differences:
  • The 1st Gen uses a pair of Phillips screws instead of 10mm bolts to hold the "oh **** handle" on.
  • The angle of the "oh **** handle" is very different on a 1st Gen
  • There is less room between the steering wheel and handle so you will have to grind down the RAM: RAM-B-218-1U mount to make it shorter. (I squared it off so it fit inside the handle better as well.

Update: Took the Tacoma to MOAB and Colorado

Here are some pics from a recent trip to Moab, Ouray and Silverton. Here is the trip thread http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/64714-Seattle-to-Arches-Moab-Ouray-and-Beyond. The trip was awesome. Despite my rear axle seal going out on the second to last day in Colorado and me having to add oil/check on it every 300miles on the way home. This was by far some of the coolest places I have ever been and recommend it for anyone who has not gone.

Awesome...

I will (if all goes well) be making that same trip next June 2012. Moab and Colorado, except I will be leaving from VA and taking two weeks. I acan't imagine how beautiful it will be once I get there.

Great build.

New Tires

It has been a while since I posted about my Tacoma. It has been used pretty hard as a DD for the last year. For 6 months I commuted 90 miles a day in it. Surprisingly comfortable for 3 hours a day in traffic. Anyway, one day I hit a hammer on the freeway. It cleanly took out on of my tires. So it was time for a new set. I went from 32x12.5's to 33x10.5's to match my FJ62.

Well its been a long time since I have actually done anything with the Tacoma. It has been a stout and reliable DD for years. I have had a few projects come and go,

Here is my 1990 FJ62 (http://www.expeditionportal.com/for...Build-(aka-the-Tractor)?p=1060153#post1060153)

I just bought a 1978 FJ40 last month:

Well now the time has come to get back to fixing up the Tacoma. I am selling my SAR rig (the 62) and using the Tacoma for it. In the last month it has received a new battery, water pump, timing belt, spark plugs/wires, a new tool box, new LCAs and now I need to rebuild the coil overs (I have a bad bushing on the passenger side). Thought I would bump this old thread with an updated photo and updated progress.

Just for fun I modded the bed a while back for some comfort:

I'll have to get the measurements but I have the SAW factory valving on them. I really like them. They do a great job of smoothing out bumps.

Its been a long time since I posted an update. I have been a little busy working on this: http://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/irishs-slow-1978-rustic-green-build.802114/#post-9235933 my 1978 Rustic Green FJ40.

That being said I took the Tacoma out last weekend and took on part of the WABDR (Washington Backcountry Discovery Route). We traveled from Yakima to Bluet Pass. I need to get out and run the entire trail someday, but a weekend away was nice. In a bonus I got to see Table Mountain and the destruction left by a big fire there two years ago.

Outside of Yakima above Highway 410:

Aux Fuse Box

Last month I decided it was time to add a better Aux fuse box with a breaker. (Blue Sea systems 12 gang holder with a 50amp breaker). I had a rats nest of temporary wires running to my battery and wanted to clean it up a bit. I fabbed up a bracket from some scrap metal I had laying around. I wanted it to mount over the engine fuse box due to proximity to the battery and it was an open space.

Test fitting:

Wired up. It makes the engine bay look A LOT cleaner.

Flex Test of the rebuilt Sway-A-Ways

I had my from Sway-A-Way 2.5's rebuilt and wanted to do some flex testing back in December on a Christmas Tree run. I was looking for a good parking spot and this seemed ideal:

10424416_10152440873051691_816663401236891223_n.jpg

The rear received new OME shocks in June and they so far seem to be making a big difference. I need to get new rear springs or some shackles to level out the ride. After the rebuild the front is sitting a little higher than the rear.
