Sounds like you have it well in hand, looking forward to your build. Having it slide in and keeping the steel frame is a good idea. Aluminum is very rigid and could fail after a lot twists and turns. It has tremendous advantages, but draw backs as well. I have always liked the idea of a slide in, so you have other uses of your trailer.

Back at it again. Finished up the subframe and bolted it to the box, an installing exterior plywood today. Hopefully I'll get the frp on the roof tomorrow. Then next weekend get frp on front and sides, build temporary door, and bolt the whole thing to the trailer for test run to Gilmer on the 30th.

Trying this weekend to get it complete enough for test run to BMRA next weekend. It has skin, and it's rolling.

That is an awful lot of flat surface area when heading down the road. I would suggest building in a bit of aerodynamics up front.

I plan to, just not sure when. I would like to build an aluminum cabinet to sit on the tongue. Sloped top, and sides profiled to match the tongue. It's not something I'm too worried about right now, I think my Jeep pushes a big enough hole in the air to fit the trailer through. I may change my mind after next weekend though.

I am somewhat concerned about the weight distribution now that it's on the trailer. I lost quite a bit of tongue weight. The toolbox going up front weighs near 200# loaded, but I still may have to play around when loading to get it comfortable.

Nice project, I have an old dirtbike trailer that I was thinking of doing something like this to.

How do you like those Baja TA's?

I love the Baja's. I've made one run on them, and they performed better than any tire I've ever used. I crawled everything in low gear at about 800 rpm, even the stuff I usually have to have wheelspin to get over.

I'll post up the spreadsheet tomorrow, it's at work.

Well, it's not finished, but close enough for a test drive to Gilmer next weekend.

Took it for a spin this afternoon, it pulls nice. Made 25-30 miles at highway speeds, didn't see any issues.

I learned a couple of things in installing the frp this weekend.

The special glue for the frp seems like a great idea, because it gives you some time to work instead of instantly grabbing like contact cement. The down side is, it doesn't instantly grab like contact cement. I used it on the top, and after fighting for a whole day to keep it nice and flat, I switched to contact for the sides.

Also, the little plastic molding that is made for the frp isn't going to work. I don't like the way it fits, and it won't hold up to any kind of impact or pressure. I'm going to replace it with 1" aluminum angle at some point. I should have gone that direction to start with.

What size rims and tires are you running on the trailer and what is the start angle of your torsion axle?

Observer
Just an A/T 31*10.50*15 on I think an 8" wide rim. I would like to have a little more room under the fender, but I haven't got close yet. Now that the camper is there, I could pull the fender up a little, but that would be less than an inch.

Made the 4 hour haul to Gilmer. Trailer pulled great. MUCH easier to set up camp when you're not sleeping in a tent.

Daytime shots in camp, and some goofing around Jeep stuff. We had a great weekend. Now it's time to get back to work. Next trip is May 5, after that is Ouray in late June.
