jk advice needed

What size tires are you going to run with the RK lift Ty-Dean and where are the pics?!?!?

yeah, it's a tough one, deciding between 33's and 35's is probably where I should really start. If I go 33's I'd definately go with RK's 2.5" max travel, which seems more of a true 2.5" lift and might not look bad with 33's (still trying to find some pics of this setup).

I am going with 33's. The JK is our daily driver.
The wife needs to feel comfortable driving this one.
I already have a TJ with a 6 inch long arm lift on 35's so I will keep the JK a little more mild.

No pics of the JK lifted yet..........still deciding on the brand of tires and wheels.

If you would like to see pics of JK's on 33's and 35's see below:

Bryan, found a local guy who has the OME lift and 35" Duratrac's (have heard great things about these tires). He's got a manual Saharra but had the axles swapped out for some stock rubi ones so has the 4.10's like us. Next time he comes out for the coffee meet he's going to let me know and take it for a test drive, so should be able to give you a pretty good, first hand account of how much powerloss we could expect.

im with you gasman better to pay extra for the quality product right off the bat and not have to worry about it. getting the AEV suspension will mean putting some other projects i had planned on hold for awhile.

sorry you ended up selling your xj. i read in your thread you were planning on keeping it awhile. although i dont think youll miss her all that much with your new jeep to keep you occupied.

i dint want to sell it , 15 yrs of blood sweat and tears i put into that jeep, lots of memories,, the guywho bought it stoped me on the street a yr ago and said if i ever want to sell call him then i seen him a couple of weeks ago again we pulled up to red light together he rolls down the window and says i hear your jeep might be for sale, i took his# this time , so what do i do? ive drove it once since i bought the rubi, its not making sense to keep it insured for a couple of w/e runs a yr, the guy is wheeler , and i know he should treat her right, and the best part is he didnt even argue the price , he is picking it thursday ,, and i will cry

thanks for the first hand experience with both the AEV and the OME. after reading your post im glad i decided not to go with OME. i was very close to placing an order for an OME lift a few days ago.

Cool. Glade to help. If you haven't already check out the AEV forum lots of good info. Also when I decided to switch lifts. I found local people to give me rides in there jeeps. This helped out a lot. I was able to ride in jk's with Currie, Teraflex, Poly Performance and AEV. So if you have some local jeepers try to hit them up for a ride.

Hi I'm new and a little late in the thread but thought I'd add in my experiences. We do a good mix of road trips with pretty decent four wheeling and camping... we find places we're interested in driving and find interesting ways to get there.

I had a Full Traction Ultimate 3" put on when the Jeep was a few weeks old (Rubicon Unlimited). It's pretty decent. I'd echo the comments on matching weight. I have the heavy duty front springs but that vendor doesn't offer a rear HD option. I have a Rock Hard tire carrier and frequently have a loaded action packer on there plus fuel and water... and a large Autohome tent on top. It started to sag bad and one shock blew.

Things I've changed since then:
Recently I did a driveway swap for OME 4" rear springs, 40lbs over stock weight set up. (I did need to use a coil coil spring compressor as they're pretty tall off the Jeep). That actually leveled it out well. For rear shocks I put on new Bilsteins; the ride is much better. One of my lower adjustable control arms stripped (I had it welded as a fix on the road) so while I was under there I replaced the lower rears with Poly Performance arms.

Also, keep an eye on your front trackbar mounts. My frame side one ovaled out. I put on a reinforcement bracket (also from polyperformance). Apparently that's not uncommon and it was an easy install (well except for the bolt seized in the bushing and the need to employee a sawzall and of course then replacing the bushing). In retrospect, I'd wished I'd put that on in the beginning (when it would have been really easy) the factory bracket is kind of flimsy.

On tires, I have 35" BFG A/T's. With 4.88 gears (6 speed) it has very tolerable power loaded down, chugging not too slowly up highway grades (home is Colorado) and pretty decent when the tent is off and not loaded down. I've been pretty happy with them as always. They've been on rocks, aired down on dunes, in snow, etc. I have had to scrape mud out of them once on a really mucky trail but they are A/T's.

Anyways, sorry for the long first post, but thought I'd pass along my couple of years living with the JK.

It's the Newmarket one that Wayne does on Tuesday nights. There are a couple guys local to you though that I know with 3.5"'s and 35's, in Fonthill and St. Kitts. I'll be down in Welland for the Thanksgiving weekend, you going to be around? Maybe we can get a bunch of the JK's together one night.

First, you all are welcome. I spent almost a year researching lifts, bumpers and other options before rolling the dice and going AEV. (Hadn't had the opportunity to drive an AEV equipped Jeep.) It was the consistency of customer reports that finally sold me. Those fellows on other forums whose reports and suggestions helped me decide, well, I owe great thanks and I'm carrying on, passing the word and trying to help others as I was helped.

[Kinda like when you pull out a guy stuck in the mud or a snow bank. He tries to give you $'s and you don't take them, but tell him it would be reward enough if he promised to help the next stuck guy.]

As far as front drive shaft, well, maybe yes and maybe no from what I have read. With the Hemi swap I think things may be different for my JK, but AEV tells me that there is no issue and I have not had any clearance issue (but like you all, my die hard rock crawling days are past.) One reason for no issue is that I am running the AEV supplied Bilstien 5100's, which are the correct length for a 3.5" lift but limit axle droop when run on the 4.5" suspension without extensions. I don't have extensions and don't want them either, no hard core rock crawling, no need for my use.

I'm coming up on an oil change shortly and I'll have the shop lift the Jeep by the frame and get under the Jeep, something I've been meaning to do. From underneath with weight on the tires, there doesn't appear to be any issue, but the axle doesn't drop straight down or flex straight up when the suspensions articulates. BTW, the issue is stock drive shaft boot/skid plate or cross member interference for those who may not know.

There is the possibility that you would have to do nothing; this seems rare for autos but not so rare for standard trans JK's. (Gotta love it where everyone has the same Jeep, same engine, same transmission, but some need to trim, some don't, some need to replace, but some don't... Its the same way with fender well pinch seam trimming.) There is also the possibility that you can gain clearance by "trimming" the offending auto trans skid - not applicable to you all - and front cross member. I have not been under a standard trans JK, so not so sure one way or the other. The photos that I have seen of trimming for clearance seems to indicate that this option is an acceptable fix. For all of the hoopla on the forums regarding stock shafts, they are apparently stronger than 1350 shafts. Clearance issues are what is causing problems.

Also, to avoid any clearence issues, and to avoid trimming, you could always use axle straps to limit front axle droop. Think bumpstops in reverse.

You can access an AEV forum from their website, and many questions posed there by customers are answered by AEV's engineers, techs or even AEV's owner. Be warned that their response on the website is slow, really slow in some cases. A lot of the time a customer will answer the Q before an AEV tech, engineer or whoever will answer. Either way, Dave, the owner, has written that typically there is some interference. He has also posted that he is working on a replacement shaft that doesn't rely on U joints but uses the oem style joint - the name of that joint is on the tip of my tongue (Reponza?), but not on the tip of my fingers right now - since the oem style joint is stronger.

If anyone here wants to try out an AEV equipped Jeep, they would be welcome to try mine. I live near Washington, DC. Let me know...

I had the Teraflex 2.5" BB kit on both my 2 door JK and 4 door Rubicon. Went with the spacers and shock extension brackets and it was great. Cheap, easy to install, and didnt affect the ride or explode or anything else people will make you think coil spacers will do. I will say if you plan to winch and bumpers going with 3" of lift is a better idea since the weight of armor will drop your ride some.

Thanks inked.... great thread with good info. Yeah with a lot of mud the AT's might be a pain. I've never run the Toyo's but I have heard good things about them. I had Goodyear MT/R's on my TJ and they wore really fast, even for a mud tire it seemed. I've been thinking about trying the Duratrac's at some point myself as a step up for snow and mud performance, based on what I've been hearing.

Find or invent an excuse and come on down.

And here's a thought: I would make that roughly 9hr (?) drive in a four door JK without thinking twice. But you could not pay me to make that drive in any other Wrangler or CJ that I have owned (but when I was something like 20, when I had my CJ5, well..., youth is great.)
