I swapped out my antenna for a powered rubber stubby antenna. The install was a total PIA. I was unable to use the original antenna cable, and feeding the new one through the fender in through the dash behind/beside the glove box was one of the most unpleasant things I've ever done. I am NOT a small, delicate, mechanically inclined person with precision fingers and dexterity! I ran a positive lead to the battery, and my reception is the same if not better than previously. Oddly, AM reception is almost non-existent now, but FM is amazing. It was a cheap $10 antenna at AutoZone

Can you dig up a link, or brand/model#. My power antenna has a broken mast and I don't hear a motor run. Just want to replace it with something simple and functional. I too listen to a lot of radio.

I hear you Nathan, I previously swapped out my power antenna base for a non-power one and had to pull the antenna cable, too. As you said, not fun. Glad to hear your new antenna is working well. I'd love to see a pic when you have a chance.

Okay guys, here is a basic photo of the install. I can't recall which of these two products I purchased. I remember holding both of them in my hands and not understanding the differences between the two of them. I probably just bought the $14 one, but I am not certain.

Here it is installed:

It bends a bit in the wind when driving, but so far returns to an upright position upon stopping.

I just replaced my antenna too, but instead of running the wire inside, I cut the existing antenna wire outside the vehicle and spliced the new to the old. I didn't want to tear into the dash to run the new one, call me lazy. I'm just too busy and the splice job worked great.

Bumper Build, VIII

Well, 3 months later I can say the bumper is done-ish.

Painted in Rustoleum bed liner and wired, this is the single swing arm configuration for around town duty. I moved the license plate as it is blocked in the stock location when the other swing arm is in place.

Added a reverse light as well. Same kind as on my roof rack.
WP_20140415_010.jpg

I'm torn on the tail light configuration. Logic (and probably the law) dictates that the amber lights should be on the left and rightmost bumper extremities for clarity in turn indication. I just don't like how close it places the running lights.

Here are the lights reversed. I like the wider spacing of the running lights but having the turn signals on the inside of the running lights is a little counter-intuitive. I could see how in this configuration, when indicating a left turn for example, with the amber light blinking on the right of the left brake light, the driver behind me could become confused into expecting a right turn.

Another option would be to delete the amber lights and go all red with the outer reds being turn indicators.

Million dollar idea: Oval tail light that is half red and half amber. I've looked. It doesn't exist.

Any thoughts?

A month or so ago I picked up SoCalMonty's ARB bumper he had for sale. I was stoked as I had been looking for one on Craigslist for awhile to no avail.

Here's the bumper as it came to me from SoCalMonty, complete with Death Valley mud!!!

Since one of the parking light lenses had seen better days...
WP_20140406_003.jpg

...I installed these instead.

Next up were the mounting brackets. To make this bumper fit a Montero, somebody had previously welded on Montero bumper brackets. The brackets didn't inspire confidence so I decided to redo them.

Interesting technique
WP_20140416_002.jpg

Cut out the old.
WP_20140416_004.jpg

Added the new in 1/4." Probablly overkill but it's what I had.
WP_20140419_002.jpg

I then decided to add these 4 1/2" LEDs for fogs. Used a hole saw to cut openings in the bumper...forgot to take pics of that.
WP_20140418_002.jpg

The bumper didn't quite match the wheel openings.
WP_20140419_13_46_58_Pro.jpg

So I extended the ends...d'oh, still too short! Oh well I can live with it.

Painted up in Rustoleum bed liner, lights intalled and mounted.

Also painted the tow hooks red for visibility and because it looks cool.

Hmm...now I need a winch...

Thanks again Sean!

Thanks fellas.

Eurosonic, the fogs are $20 on Amazon link and a fantastic deal. Every bit as good as any other Chinese LED light I've paid much more for, and very bright. Highly recommended.

Juice

Decided to add a fuse block to the engine compartment.

Got this little guy. Blue Sea 5028. It's good for 100A total, 30A per circuit.

I'm running out of space in the engine compartment so I decided to mount it on the passenger side.
Made this bracket out of aluminum.

Night Vision

I had bought this 21 inch LED light bar from BlitzPro about a year ago and was underwhelmed from the get go.
WP_20140406_006%255B1%255D.jpg

It'll be unceremoniously demoted to the rear of the roofrack where it should be more than sufficient for blinding tailgaters.

Looking for an alternative with more throw, I considered Hella 4000s but wasn't impressed by what I read about them or any incandescent offroad lights in terms of output and electrical draw. Seemed that HIDs were the way to go but holy hell, the name brand ones are eye-poppingly expensive.

All of which led me to these courtesy of eBay.
WP_20140426_12_11_03_Pro.jpg

They are the highly regarded "Kragen HIDs" which were popular for their bang for the buck a few years back...until they stopped being sold at Kragen (which is actually O'reilly now in the LA area)...and they came back onto the market with the price doubled under the Rugged Ridge brand name. Google provides many threads about them.

They are 7" and 35 watts. Plastic housing, glass lens, red knock-off "Hella HID" trim ring, plastic stone guard. They come in Euro beam or spot, these are Euro.

I like those HIDS. What was the damage on those?

Kevin, a little under $100. I bought them from this seller link.

There are many other variants on eBay including a 4" model, 55, 70, 90 and 100 watt versions, some with color variations and housing design tweaks. Search "hid off road lights."

I'm happy with the purchase. Price/performance ratio is high on this one. They completely blow that little lightbar I had out of the water, just no comparison.

Right on. Yeah, I have 35watt Hid Hi/Lo for my regular driving lights and love them. I have 4 Hellas up on my roof rack, which the previous owner installed and I want to swap them for HID's. Looks like a good investment to me!
