So I unplugged the router and reset it. It still timesout when I try to join our network. The prefs are set to automatic and the indicator on the network prefs page stills show yellow.

Beyond the above

once in network prefs - hit the advanced button to get you here

are your settings right for your wireless router?

When you go to Network prefs, on the right under the "Turn Airport Off" button, does it say "Airport is connected but does not have an IP address" or something to that effect?

If so, your router is likely out of dhcp leases and you'll want to dump it's cache (method differs by router) and start all over. Last ditch, dump the routers settings, do a hard reset, and start all over again setting up your network. Do you have any other computers on the network?

And of course, if you can, just dump that router and go with an Airport Extreme. Once I set mine up it's been running smoothly without issue for 4 months now...I've had a Powerbook, Macbook pro, 2 Macbooks, windows XP desktop, and a linux box all running through it at one time or another...

Back from dropping off the baby, now when I look at the advanced preferences there is nothing under IPv4 Address,Subnet Mask, or Router.

You will need the information from your internet service provider, using the set up assistant you can fill in all the pertinent info.

Something could be missing or a number out of place, which is why you can't connect to the wireless with your airport. (yellow light)

This is going to sound funny...but take the PB to a free hotspot somewhere and see if you can get connected through Airport there. If so, the issue is the router and the timing was just coincidental that this happened after an update. If you get the same issue at the hotspot, then there's something up with your Airport card and we can start working from that...

So I almost missed the appointment, I made it all the way across Los Angeles in 25 minutes poor old FJ60 was cranking along at 75. So they checked it out and the airport system is fine, their best guess was that it is the something with the wireless modem but without seeing it they couldn't say what. I am trying to talk the wife into an airport extreme but she has concerns about it being compatible with her PC.

Bummer, I was hoping you'd have some techno-geek answer that I could add to my very small bag of tricks.

It's strange that the modem is working with a hard wire but not on airless?? My next guess would be it's the configuration of the modem. You may have to re program it or reset it back to factory settings. Do you still have the owners manual?

OK, so troubleshooting requires carefully looking at all the settings one by one. Only making sure you do one thing at a time.

My guess since the Airport system in your Mac usually can find the wireless system automatically and connect. I would go to the router first and check its settings.

Also; sometimes you have to select your router as a preferred network. You can check this once you are in - System prefs/network/ select airport on the left then hit the advanced button. See if your named router shows up.

And: when things go wonky its a good idea to repair permissions.
Go to Applications/utilities/disk utility - select your volume ( usually second drive down on the list) then hit the repair permission button. Restart.

(some recommend to restart in safe boot mode by restarting with the "shift key "down then repair permissions) but you don't always have to.

Not to get all technical on ya (its hard for me to get too technical anyway ;-) but I suspect your router is wireless but your modem is wired? Just an FYI.
