Sloan,

How old is your wireless router?
More than likely there's something not setup properly in the wireless router, or it's firmware is really old.

Your wife has nothing to fear from Apple routers. When devices comply to standars, it means that any device that complies with that standard will interoperate with it. That's the whole deal with 8211. (A/B/G/N).

I dont' know how old is your Power Book. For trouble shooting, it would be nice to know what model it is and what version of the Aiport card it has inside.

If you want to go a less expensive route get a WRT54G from Linksys. It is a 8211.G router, backwards compatible with B. They cost about $50 and are pretty much bullet proof. I have installed a bunch of these in the past in mixed Mac/PC environments. Zero Problems.

If you go with an Apple Router. I really dig Time Capsule. It's a 8211.N wireless router, compatible with B and G with a hard disk meant to with used in tandem with Time Machine. Time Machine is a Leopard feature that will automatically backup your computer every hour. $299 will get you the 500 GB model, while $499 will get you the 1TB model. Once of these will be my next router at home. Backing up with Time Machine is the best feature in Leopard.

The router is about 2 years old, it is a westell versalink model 327W. I am tracking down the instructions for it and am going to try and reset it this weekend.

Wild guess, since you can access the internet from the ethernet cable into the modem - the settings for the airport wireless on the Mac is what is not creating the handshake.

ACCESSING VERSALINK
Before you can browse the Internet using VersaLink, you must
perform the following steps.

1. Access VersaLink by clicking on your web browser. Next, type either
http://dslrouter or http://192.168.1.1 in the web browser’s address
window and press ‘Enter’ on your keyboard.

2. Follow the instructions in the screens to set up your account profile.

DesertDude I cannot thank you enough for sticking with me, I am curreently on hold with Applecare. I am alos waiting for my wife to get home as she has the passwords, etc. to access the westell. If Applecare cannot get this sorted out this badboy is going back in the box and getting returned. Every tech I have talked to refuses to see that it was fine until after the updates and for a 10 day old computer to cause me this much headache is not gonna fly. DesertDude I owe you a beer or 3.

Sure no problem - I do not think your mac is broke.. though not connecting.

Network trouble shooting can sometimes be very frustrating. There are many settings and unknown terminology.

I think we could waltz you through this one step at a time if need be.

Hang in there...

I don't think it's the computer, the PB is a really stable platform, and will provide much more reliable service in the long run.

I think that going through the router set up is the way to go, it's also a great learning experience.

So everything is fine after the re-install, thanks everyone. The tech told me that the reason that he didn't think it was the router was that the other computer worked fine on it. We'll see how long this lasts and I'll definitely be more careful of checking out updates from this point on. :mixed-smiley-030:

I didn't realize the other computer was using the wireless.

I update our PB frequently and have never had an issue with connectivity with our wireless router. Hopefully this will be your one and only.

Awesome... generally you can update with Software update as needed with no issues. Going into the networking prefs is another story.

I love a happy ending :wavey:

Updates are not all that bad ;) - you can choose which ones you want to update.
You can also choose how its set in Prefs
