Sloan,
How old is your wireless router?
More than likely there's something not setup properly in the wireless router, or it's firmware is really old.
Your wife has nothing to fear from Apple routers. When devices comply to standars, it means that any device that complies with that standard will interoperate with it. That's the whole deal with 8211. (A/B/G/N).
I dont' know how old is your Power Book. For trouble shooting, it would be nice to know what model it is and what version of the Aiport card it has inside.
If you want to go a less expensive route get a WRT54G from Linksys. It is a 8211.G router, backwards compatible with B. They cost about $50 and are pretty much bullet proof. I have installed a bunch of these in the past in mixed Mac/PC environments. Zero Problems.
If you go with an Apple Router. I really dig Time Capsule. It's a 8211.N wireless router, compatible with B and G with a hard disk meant to with used in tandem with Time Machine. Time Machine is a Leopard feature that will automatically backup your computer every hour. $299 will get you the 500 GB model, while $499 will get you the 1TB model. Once of these will be my next router at home. Backing up with Time Machine is the best feature in Leopard.
Regards
Alvaro
