Me and My PN-40

Yikes, what a rough experience. I don't have any experience with delorme, but my old Garmin has always worked *once I figured out the interface*

This kind of experience is why I'm hesitating to buy another GPS and thinking instead to just use my laptop as my in-vehicle GPS.

As a owner of a pn20 and 40 with O zip problems it is hard to imagine 3 bad units. Have you been over to there forums? www.forum.delorme.com

Well, i just got the third "new" pn40se unit from Delorme. they were kind enough to give me a free version of topo 8. I just tried to set up the device and guess what. it doesnt work. So I got on the phone and spent an hour with the tech guy, still doesnt work. It must be your computer, he says. Oh? let me try it on a different computer...oh, it still doesnt work. let me send you a new cord, he says...I have a new cord right here still in its package...still doesnt work on either computer...you are out of luck, he say. I want my money back...you can only do that after 30 days, he says... I have had 3 of these in just shy of 1 year. Not one of the units have worked. Delorme has had the units for 9 of the 12 months I have owned it. out of luck? I am not happy at all.
I would have a hard time ever buying or even excepting another Delorme gps. right now I dont even think I will ever buy a paper map from them again!

Yes, I have been on the forum searching for the solution. Believe me, I want this thing to work. I am beyond frustrated with it. I cant tell you how many hours I have spent on the phone with Delorme tech support. And I will say this, their techs have always been very kind and diligent in trying to solve this problem. But now, it seems we are both at a dead end. The last tech seems to be trying to put the problem on my computer, even though the unit doesnt work on any computer............anyone want to buy a PN-40se (8gig internal memory) I have RAM bits for a truck and my motorcycle.

I agree - something isn't right here with 3 bad units in a row. I actually own several and they all work fine. You say "it doesn't work" - what doesn't work?

Also - maybe your computer IS the culprit... You can easily eliminate that as the issue by loading the software on a friend/wife/relative/work computer and see if it works there...

I believe he said he already tried it on another computer.

The crappy thing about tech support is that you can spend 2hrs on the phone and get nothing done, then next time you call, the next tech tries to attempt the same things and still gets nothing done, wasting even more time.

I know because I have 8+ hours tied up with motorola & 4+ hrs with Qwest/Sony regarding NAT type 2 on my PS3.

Wow!

That's terrible you are having such a hard time with the PN-40, They should give your money back after all you went through. I would continue to pursue it and possible contact the BBB. As a side note I have a PN-40 and have no probplems with is, for me it is much more complex to use then my old Garmin and more than I will ever need.

Good luck to you and continue to fight the fight.

The major problem is that it wont load maps to the internal 8gig memory, which I have already mentioned. I have also attempted this on 2 different computers, 4 different cords and 2 different versions of topo USA. versions 7 and 8. Kind of useless if there are no maps on a GPS...It wont read of the SD card either. I say "it" I should say "they"

I got one for Xmas of 08 and was never really impressed with it. It died the next summer, I sent it in and they sent me a complete new unit. Again I wasn't all that impressed with it. I was taking the truck to the dealer for the dash replacement some months ago and cleaned everything out of the truck in a hurry, including the PN-40, and I haven't found it since. I'm not really all that stressed about it because I never got too excited about it. Anyway if you get yours working and need a Ram mount for your moto let me know, THAT I can find!

The occasional/random problem unit aside - I'm surprised people are not impressed with the entire DeLorme solution. I'm guessing you never used it to it's potential. What other consumer GPS can you put imagery, vector-topo data, scanned USGS quads, draw layers, GIS layers all on the unit at the same time? Mine has worked flawlessly out of the box - in fact I have two. Both are really awesome units, and I would be surprised to find that this situation is a minority based on the feedback I've read on their user forums.
