Mortonm's 2001 Xterra Build

Sounds like good advice. I think i will just stick with the duallys. I am planning on replacing the metal bumper pieces (front and back) this winter that are rusting bad. It makes sense to do the hidden winch, lights and bumpers all at the same time, will be much easier for wiring and it will already be all apart

You won't be disappointed with the duallys, if in your location you have room for the D2s, go for them. The supplied wiring harness is very high quality, and the lights are insanely bright and near indestructible. Recommended.

I believe the dually housings are 3" x 3". The opening is 2.5 inches for the stock fogs, but it looks like the actual lense of the light is less than the 3x3, so I'm hoping that it will fit without any light being cutoff.

The lens is probably like 2.75" x 2.75" but the small cutoff should be ok. Otherwise you may want to check out these Baja Designs lights, I would think they fit perfectly.

they do look nice, and would fit the opening better, as is always the issue is finding a vendor up here or somewhere to ship it without killer duties. I have a bit of time before I plan on ordering, so ill look closer, maybe somewhere up here carries them

Had a weird noise after I came back, two weird noises actually. Ended up that some of the bearings and seals in the front of the truck were gone. They were the original so after 195 000 km I guess it was time. The rotors were actually further gone than I thought so the pads and rotors were changed as well.

I had a shop near my work look at it and they changed the brakes before they called me (didn't know I had the parts). Its not a big deal because they have done very well by me in the past and I can keep the pads and rotors for next time.

Stops a lot quicker! Almost kissed the steering wheel, they must have bled the brakes also because there is way less travel now.

Oh well money spent and they used quality parts but it cost as much as my lights and winch probably would have.

Would the bearings and seal issue be a byproduct of water crossing you think? And good to hear you had your brakes sorted!

I think so. The seals must have failed sometime earlier this summer. Then when I drove through all the water it bypassed the seals. I had no issues on the trip because we were driving so much. It sat over 48 hours after we got back so in thinking they corrded while they were stationary and that's what caused them to heat up and begin to fail.

That definitely sounds plausible, you don't have manual hubs right?

Correct, the Xterras came with auto hubs

I actually called Nissan last year to see how much a new auto-hub would cost. I posted it in here i think, but it was in excess of $700....EACH.

When one of mine fails, I will be looking for a used one, failing that Ill be selling my one good and get a set of warn manual hubs. Little more work but during the summer unless I am hitting dirt I can just leave them unlocked and in the winter time if it looks like snow if coming I can lock them in the for the day/days

My buddy just got a set of Warns for less than $200. If you really need them, that's way better than $1,400!

Love your build! I swear, some of the woods and trails you drive through look so similar to ours in Michigan. I suppose we're not too far away from you, though.

Not too far away at all, just a little trip down the 401. What part of Michigan are you from ?

Yup ill be getting some Warns if these fail. Hopefully not an issue for awhile

I have often thought the Warn's would be a good upgrade. I don't know if you have experienced this but when I am out in the snow and get stuck I find it terribly frustrating that hubs momentarily unlock between direction changes. It makes it nearly impossible to rock the truck out as the back end is already spinning before the front end engages .

I think then Warn manual hubs are the way to go if the autos should fail. Definitely time tested- I really love mine.
