Fun History Fact: Etymology of "Tank"

Originally designed and invented by the British during the First World War as a trench warfare tactic. It was a top secret project and even those building the prototypes didn't know its true purpose. They were told that it was to be a tracked water carrier. Essentially a large water tank on tracks, the name was shortened by the crews to just "Tank" and the name has stuck ever since.

What does this have to do with my Xterra? well Tomorrow I am picking up something new for it, the above is a little clue as to what it is

MATTRACKS!

Gas tank skid plate?

As far as the lighting goes I got to actually put my IPFs to good use recently (trip report in the completed adventure section). These IPFs have a dual reflector for dual range (spots + driving). I pointed them so the beam was further out than the low beams yet still have a pretty good coverage for the area in between and the sides of the road. I then flicked my high beams on soo I could see as far down the trail as possible. This was a good enough setup to do 45-55mph on a bad washboard road in pitch darkness and helped me avoid an accident with a black cow standing in the middle of the trail (there was another cow and a calf just waiting to jump into the trail after the first one). I felt the the high beam wasn't as bright as I would've liked but the combination worked quite well. I have my IPFs on a separate switch so I can aim them and turn them on as desired. The Rigid spots are pretty nice lights but I would want to mount them higher than the stock fog location for better visibility.

Both very close guesses!

I came across a set of skid plates on kijiji saturday afternoon. They were custom made (and used) by the guy I bought them from on his 2000 Xterra. They are in two pieces, one to cover the engine and transmissions and the other covers the transfer case.

It will provide a solid plate from the front (just behind the stock front skid) all the way to the crossmember that holds the torsion bars. It will cover almost half of the underside and almost all of the important bits.

They are made out of 3/16" steel and arebeefy! They were very well made with access ports for fluid changes. They were painted at one point but have been scuffed up a bit. Ill clean em up and hit them with a little paint before they go on.

I wasn't really looking for skids but at less than the third of the cost of any of the new name brand companies it was a deal I couldn't really pass up. With no plans to go any taller (tires or suspension) I think it will give me a little more piece of mind.

I should have some pictures up later tonight.

Yeah I would love to mount them higher, just seems way to convenient to put them into holes I already have.

In other news I just found out that Canadian Tire up here sells a rebranded version of the rigid duallys...they are on sale this week for $165...would be shocking if I didnt end up with these before then haha

I havent gotten a chance to see them in person, but one of the reviewers stated that the wiring all said rigid....

I'm about to join the 235/85 club!

once you go skinny you don't go back...or something like that

I am very interested to hear your thoughts on the Terratrac DT, looks like a nice tread and could be in the running when I have to replace mine. I have about 30,000 miles on them so I hope I am only about half way done, they appear to be wearing quite well.

looking forward to the pictures

I brought my camera away with me to work this week, took a couple nice pictures of a road a tried out as well as the skids, I forgot the SD card though so the pictures are on the camera, and I dont have the cable.

Here is a quick pic of the skids after I picked them up. They are dirty, but actually it has a nice thick layer on paint on underneath, its hard to tell but it might be powder coated.

Came across this "no maintenance road" between a few farmers fields yesterday. It has rained a lot here in Ontario over the last week or so. There was a lot of standing water on it. I wasnt sure how muddy the base of the road was. I made it over this section fairly easily, and the next section was even deeper. I only made it a third of the way and decided to turn around, it was getting worse.

I will have to go back and check out the rest, I don't think I would have had any issue getting through anything I was just alone, with no recovery equipment, on my way to work and with my fairly expensive mountain bike on the back. Seemed like some pretty good reasons to back out.

Looks like fun, but good call on the turnaround. Especially when you're alone, it sucks to get in over your head. Ask me how I know :p

How do you ? Haha

It wouldn't have been the end of the world, I wasn't that far in the middle of nowhere and there was a farmer a mile back down the road with a tractor it just would have sucked. Wasntmentally or physically prepared for that

When in doubt give it gas :)

Nice score on those skid plates they seem to be nicely done with the lips bent longitudinally for increased rigidity. When are they going on?
