Give me your thoughts...

Well Guys, I'm overwhelmed by your positive responses so I'll open this up to further input. In the interest of simplicity I'm considering a manual lift that resembles the following concept on a larger scale...(see example)
The roof would pitch up and forward on the two pivoting legs and be further secured to the rear by a drop-down leg once it was raised. A "sun area" would be exposed in the rear and a bed platform would extend over the cab and hood. All of this could be left open or progressively closed in for camping. I can fit 4' legs that will allow stand-up room when extended.

Ok. Let me have it. What do you think? :smiley_drive:

This is exactly what I think should be done. Thanks for the pic. That appears it would be relatively "easy" to put together as well.

I think that would work. But I think all the of pivoting poles would end up looking for like one of the old folding tables (think the church at Pine...). Also, I don't see how you could have both the pop top and the fold out platform while keeping it both clean and functional. But, I doubted you before and you proved your insanity

I must admit I wanted nothing to do with this when he first conjured up the insanity and am truly sad I wasn't there for the start of it all.

I have to admit that I clicked on this thread just to see how bad of an abomination it was going to be. Then saw the pictures and thought "Now, that isn't half bad!" Then realized it was also a pop-top and was impressed.

I agree that DSW4x4's pop-top would be a slick direction to go for operation: http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=53703

The actuators are not that expensive considering the options. I also like his note about having it remote controlled with a keyfob so that you can walk around it as it retracts so to make sure that you aren't catching the canvas somewhere as it closes.

So, he essentially had a shell that was just going to waste.
Hi Guys,
Thanks for your warm response to my conversion Excursion. My Brother has introduced me to your wonderful community and I'm excited to participate. Dave (evilram) has the heart of an expedition adventurer if anyone does.
I'll be posting more regarding this project soon and I warmly invite you to contribute your knowledge and experience.
Welcome aboard!

Well, if you still have unwanted parts laying around I have a Disco2 shopping list of annoying little parts I need - just let me know. I've also got a spare sunroof motor you can have if things go bad and you accidentally fry one... :D

Hah, thanks Chazz.
When my original Disco got overheated I was broken hearted. It had been a gift and I didn't want it to go to waste. We determined that if we added all the cost necessary to truly fix it we could buy another one. At that point I schemed the idea that I could buy another Disco (which we did), part-out the old one to support the new one and pull the roof for the Conversion Excursion.

Very nice job!! That is turning out really sharp. Funny thing about your build is I just started a excursion poptop for a client down in denver. I will be starting a thread on it in the next week or so. If you guys have questions or need to source parts or just want to pick my brain feel free to drop me aline or give me a call, I would be glad to help out if I can. Keep up the nice work and keep posting more pictures.

I was thinking to keep it mechanical for ease of use and less wiring work. But, we may just have to steal some ideas. I truly appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge. Totally cool of you! Do you have a shop that one could visit?

I have to say, that doesn't look bad at all!

(PS: Chilliwak, did you really have to quote all the pictures and text from the original post? Here, have a coffee: :coffee: )

I will make you a bet Harald. If you can get everyone that is talking/writing about something, and then not coping the pics from the text, to start to copy the pics into the text, when replying to a thread, then I will give you more than a coffee my friend. As much as you are annoyed that I paste the original pics from the thread, well there are just as many people that are annoyed when the pics are not recopied! :ylsmoke:
