My Journey

Some of us take pride in our work even if we don't paid for it and some of us enjoy the company of a dog, or dogs.
Still a nice write up Jerry.

The next day turned out to be a late start for us. The local recreation center opened at 11:00 a.m. and I decided it was worth the wait. It was time.....and the rain & snow mix was still lingering over LaGrande. After a shower and lunch, we were back on Interstate 84 driving west. As we left the mountains the skies began to clear giving us great views of the valley that laid ahead.....

I decided to drive further north into Washington and take Route 14 which parallels Interstate 84 and runs along the northern banks of the Columbia River.....

It was late afternoon so we were on the lookout for a spot to spend the night.....

With the help of Google Maps we found this cool little place.....Alderdale Treaty Fishing Site. I found a sign on the ground saying that it was federal property to be used by Native Americans. We camped just outside the gate, choosing not to enter private property. Access was tight, both horizontally and vertically. We just barely cleared the bridge.....couldn't help but think that the Renegade would never had made it....

It turned out to be a good spot for the night.....

The dogs were anxious to get in the water.....

The Columbia River on one side, and the incredibly busy train tracks on the other.....

We awoke to a nice sunrise.....

The air is chilled. I keep telling myself to drive south and no doubt we will soon.....

Hey Madchap.....that thing is pretty interesting but I think I'm not doing anything right now. I'm starting to reevaluate where I'm at and what I'm doing with my life these days. There's issues with entering Mexico this year....not letting in truck campers and not allowing you to tow a vehicle across the border are both huge issues for me. I haven't been home for going on two years so I'm rethinking my destination and thinking about seeing some people that are dear to me instead. Who knows.....

Well just a quick update.....we continued driving west towards Portland under cloudy skies with rain in the forecast. What a stunning drive that is along the Columbia River. A few stops along the way to stretch the legs.....

We stopped east of Portland for the night and soon the rains dumped from the skies. We woke up to morning rain which happily passed so we were back on the road. It was good to pass through Portland on a Sunday and soon we were on Interstate 5 driving south. I wasn't much in the mood for driving so we called it a day fairly early. I'm not sure if it's the cloudy skies and lack of daylight, but my mood lately seems to fit quite nicely with it.....hopefully as we go south things will change....

Tanner turns 6 months in a couple of days. Wow, that went quick ! I weighed him this morning....61 pounds !

Still hanging out in Portland and had planned to leave for the Pacific coast this morning but check out the weather forecast.....

E0F3FC4B-2013-4599-81EC-262FEF5BFDF7.jpg

And the entire Oregon coast forecast is the exact same......RAIN !!!!! I hate to miss driving the coastline, but I also hate the rain (when living in a truck camper). I guess we shall see but for now it’s dog naps, coffee and a book.....

I don't blame you for not wanting a wet shivering dog with you that want's to crawl into your lap as you are driving. Done that too many times.

Jerry, some day I will write up all of my dog tales and send them to you. I already have more than one person that wants them. I started them for a friend in the hospital. One lady wants to do a book from them. Hey, it's just a dog but as you know every dog has a personality that you loved. Perhaps I will write up about cats as well. OK maybe not all of the cats but I might write about LC.

Yea Chet.....I'm going to find us some clear skies and warm temperatures soon.....

Unkamonkey.....I wouldn't doubt one bit that you've got some great stories to tell.....

So not minutes before I was to leave Portland my friend called me and said he'd like to give it another try, that he was feeling much better. Works for me.....

Finally I was to leave Portland and make our way to the Pacific Ocean. The first night was spent in a casino parking lot. I guess maybe all of these places are the same now. They require you to check in and they give you something for free to inspire you to gamble. All I won here was a pack of playing cards, which I refused. I really find casinos to be kind of sad places. The following day I finally reached the Pacific Ocean, 30 days.....one month on the road.....

The weather continued to be pretty much horrible so we drove and drove, way more than I'd like to admit. Of course we made a few stops along the way when good weather permitted, as the Oregon coast is just some of the most amazing scenery in the world.....

After a wonderful day spent driving Route 101 along the coast, we spent the next night in a Walmart parking lot in Coos Bay, Oregon. Lots of scary people living in their vehicles here and I was glad to move on the following morning. This former veteran was camped nearby.....

The next day the weather improved a bit and we actually saw the sun a few times. What a welcome sight it is ! The dampness Of Oregon is really beginning to wear thin on me. The Arctic Fox just isn't made for this type of weather. I can't figure out how it could be, but it's always wet inside the camper. The walls drip water, the windows are constantly drenched, and yesterday I noticed that even the curtains were wet. Every morning I have to mop up the bathroom cause it's so wet. Arctic Fox said “keep your fans running”.....huh ?

Anyhow, as we drove south on Route 101, we made a stop in a really cool little town.....Bandon, Oregon.....

E629FDE5-E54A-4C57-8A6D-2F7CCB10FF24.jpg

I'd been looking for something like this since we encountered the coast, but it seemed as though everything further north was much more commercial and not that small town vibe.....

We were lucky that it was a Saturday here since the Farmer's Market was open. We got a pound of coffee from the coffee mixer (good stuff) and landed a few jars of homemade pickles.....

We checked out artwork provided to the the town by washashore.org. What an amazing idea.....

We walked the dogs along the harbor beach and watched the seals float by. There's a lighthouse at the mouth of the harbor.....

A1FF9F62-1637-4C1C-B256-5280BB9FE451.jpg

We continued south making brief stops along the ocean. Hikes into the rocks were the best although no doubt the dogs preferred the broad, deserted beaches.....

Jerry,to enjoy the OR coast this time of year, one has to embrace mold, mildew and the moss growing down the back.:)
The coast from Port Orford to Brookings is beautiful.
I usually break out into the sun around Fortuna,CA.

FWIW....The Oregon coast gets sneaker waves, that is dangerous enough, large logs in the waves increase the risk of death. In Bandon some guy tossed common sense to the wind,he and his dog were swept into the water, the city FD responded and a first responder drowned.Further north a guy got hit with a wave, the large log on his chest ended his life.

Cape Blanco in general, and the lighthouse, is worth checking out.I have been out there in high wind, maybe the windiest place on the Oregon coast, hold on to the vehicle door when opening it if the wind in howling.
The video is about the campground.

Glad to see you haven't switched over to the full on RV life but I can understand why one would.

Also the irony of the "arctic fox" not liking the moisture issue got me lol.

Hey Chet.....Oregon coast is one wet place but with a few breaks in the rain we saw some good stuff.....

ZWilson07.....I wouldn’t be surprised if I make the jump to a motor home or something similar in the near future. I often think about that Renegade. It’s also ironic that the Arctic Fox is made in Oregon and most are sold in the northwest.....

And so we finally spent a night along the Pacific Ocean wild camping. As drove we drove south on Route 101 we noticed lots of pull outs that would make excellent places to camp, but the one that caught my attention was being overlooked by a coyote on a hillside. I thought this place is great and we pulled in.....

I wanted to get a picture of the coyote with the ocean in the background but he took off fairly quickly, so that never happened. But as I approached the area where I first saw the coyote, I looked down the hill and spotted a Bobcat.....what a stroke of luck (sorry about the low quality pictures).....

Anyhow, it was so awesome to spend the night in the wild, along the Pacific Ocean.....

The next day we hung out on the beaches along Route 101. Most of the names of places that we stopped at.....well, I just don’t recall most of the names. But damn we saw some beautiful stuff.....

One place name that I do recall was Sisters Rock. The rains let up enough for us to get out and do some real exploring in the rocks with the dogs. It was a blast.....

The dogs climbed high.....

But the rains returned in the afternoon and things went downhill fast. I decided it was time for a hotel.....watch some football, grab a hot bath.....and just plain relax with the amenities most people take for granted. It was good for one night, but oddly I missed the camper when I awoke this morning.....

With clearing skies in the morning, we decided to get an early start.....which actually didn’t happen until it was nearly noon. And again we drove south on Route 101, and again we made many stops along the way.....it’s difficult not to.....

Late afternoon we found ourselves crossing into California. The coastline along southern Oregon is truly some of the most magnificent scenery I’ve ever seen.....but in California things change quickly. Route 101 moves inland and becomes quite flat.....really nothing scenic here. We arrived in Crescent City, California and decided to check out the piers and warehouses along the waterfront. We checked out the seals and sea lions, and then walked over to the Battery Point Lighthouse, established 1856. Here I took what is one of my favorite pictures ever, and then we called it a day.....
