My virgin birfield repacking/knuckle fixing odyssey

I figure that I have most of the stuff on-hand. I am thinking about getting a brass drift and I could always use a torque wrench.

I have to look into this snap ring procedure some more as I don't remember reading about it.

Harbor Freight sells a brass drift set. One of the few good buys at HF.

After the free wheel hub is off you'll see the end of the stub axle with the snap ring. The stub axle has a threaded hole to use with a bolt to pull the axle out enough to get the snap ring back on.

Gotcha, thanks!!

(Edit)

Tried to order from HF, wouldn't ship to Hawaii...

First Problem!!

Well, I thought that I was progressing along nicely until I started trying to get the hub off. I managed to remove 4 of 6 allen screws from the outer hub(just out side the "Superwinch" dial). But, 2 of them were/are stripped and in my initial efforts I cannot get them to come out.
Anyone have any ingenious methods to removed stripped bolts. The biggest problem I see is access to the area.

Here are a couple picts of the hub, and bolt.

A reverse drill bit. Run drill in reverse, usually pops right out.

If you can't find a reverse bit, Sears carries easyout kits. The also have new bit for getting out stripped bolts, screws, whatever. Works great. I am not at home, so I don't know the exact name of the new bit.

Here...it is under tap and dies on the Sears site.http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...Tools&cName=Mechanics+Tools&sName=Taps+&+Dies

This the drill extractor http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_...Tools&cName=Mechanics+Tools&sName=Taps+&+Dies

Screw-out/Drill-out extractor

This looks like it might be it?

(edit) Looks like we were looking for it at the same time!

Yep that's them, I am at work...I didn't know if I would have time to look...I guess I did.

There a two types, one you put in a drill, the other you turn by hand. I like the drill type, 'cause you can "push" harder on the drill. Than having to push and turn a tool.

Good luck, those can be a bugger. I always use some Liquid Wrench, before a try to extract a stripped bolt/screw/whatever...

The one of those hubs that came on my truck had Torx socket heads in there, NOT hex socket heads. Might try either a T-15 or a T-20 (I forget which it was) and see if they come out then.
