got a quote for $400 to install the OME mid-heavy kit and remove the bodylift. They wanted $925 for the kit

I pieced together all the parts online for around $600, thats before shipping though

Also need some help on choosing the right tire, have the 33x12.50x15 on there now, want to move to something more common in a AT tread, been looking at the BFG A/Ts just need to figure out what size to go with

not sure what is up with the 12.5 width on the tire as I see most everyone else running 10.5? Is it just because of the wheel its on or is there some sort of backspacer behind there that I cant see?

i have been thinking lately about getting a custom rear bumper fabbed up; i would like to be able to store 4 jerry cans back there, 2 for water 2 for gas so i dont have to purchase a roofrack and deal with the downsides (mpg, noise etc). Do you think 10Gals of each is overkill? Perhaps just 1 5gal of each is necessary

problem is it would all have to swing away to allow access to the rear

does anyone make something like that for the 1stgen or am i looking at going custom?

ya i just saw that bumper its what gave me the idea. Something like that with a few more jerry can holders instead of the rear tire carrier would be great. I can fit a 31" tire in the stock spare mount location. I only plan to carry 1 spare. I am contact with Gary from MudRak who hopefully has some ideas :x:

This guy makes one for a 1st gen, based out of GA... $670

Personally, I'd rather have a swing away on each side to split up the weight and require less clearance behind the truck to get in. Plus you can easily make a fold-down panel on each side to use as a work space/countertop, and mount recovery tools there instead.
If you had a Kaymar bumper like LaOutback mentioned, you could just add this to it:

or you could probably pay this guy a pretty penny to fab one:

Not sure if 10 gallons of each is overkill...you'll use it at some point I guess. It depends on how far off the main roads you're going, how long you plan on being there, and how conservative your demands are. Just keep in mind: water weighs about 8.34 lbs per gallon and gasoline weighs about 6.15 lbs per gallon (depending on temp/atmospheric psi) so you're looking at around 80lbs of water and 60lbs of fuel (I know that's not exact, I guesstimate:drool:)
140lbs plus your spare will be heavy so you may want to put the water inside.

I keep a few 10L MSR dromedary bags distributed thru out the inside my rig, at the lowest points. I like them because they're compact, multi-use (shower bag & backpack water bladder), take a beating, and the fact that it's split up into several bags makes it ghetto-baffled storage. You can even freeze the bags with no problems. Too bad they're $45 each

that first gen one from kennesay is pretty ************, i think i may be getting caught up in the gear hype and losing focus here though

$670 can take me a long way in So. America, there is a local guy selling a smittybuilt rear bumper for $150, i know it junk but its better than no bumper which i what i am working with now.

The tank on the 4runner is ~17 gallons, at ~20MPG thats a pretty good range.

I think Ill pick up the smittybuilt and put a custom bumper on the back burner for now.

I have decided that I want to go with the HD OME kit, its for sale here for $925 plus ~$100 shipping.

and I decided I am going to go with 31x10.5x15 BFG TA/KO tires

They are ~$140 each from tirerack w/ a $60 rebate

Most folks around here run a narrower tire. The main reason is because the narrower tire gives more pounds per square inch which equals greater traction. A 10.5" tire will have greater traction than a 12.5" tire but the wider tire will give more flotation. With my 22re and 4.56 gears I am running a Toyo 285/75 R16 which measures out to be 32x10.50. It is the perfect size tire for my truck. If I went to a 33x10.50 I would need to regear. Once I get my camper built I will probably regear anyway due to the weight.

At stock height you will be able to run a 32x11.50 with no problems. With a couple inches of lift you can run a 33x10.50 but would probably need to regear. The ideal would be to find a 32x10.50 and run that.

my research shows only 2 manufactures of a tire in that size 32x10.5x15, sticking with 31 for now on the 15" rim

is the 32x10.50 a common tire size in central/south america?

Well, mine are metric size 285/75 R16 and just happen to measure out to be 32x10.50. Metric sizes will vary.

31x10.50 is a great size though.

And about as common as they come.

Yeah, very common size there. I have also had some 285's that measured out to be 33x11.00. Different brands will vary in actual measurements. BFG's tend to run shorter than they advertise, while Interco tires will usually be a bit taller than they advertise.
