5/2/25 - Snorkel!
Today in unnecessary mods: Z1 Snorkel Install
As I've said before, I put money aside from time to time to buy stuff for my Xterra, and sometimes I do things just because I don't know how long there will be companies that still support a vehicle that hasn't even been made for over 10 years. In today's chapter: Z1 Snorkel
I picked this up last fall during a pretty good sale at Z1 - and I picked their snorkel for a few reasons:
1) Z1 is continuing to support the Xterra, so I try to support them whenever possible, and everything I've bought from them so far has been excellent quality
2) I did not want to drill into my A pillar, I had an FJ62 once with rusty A pillars, and I want no part of that.
3) the template!
Install was really easy, except for one part - I'll get to that in a minute.
Prior to installing I watched the video on the Z1 website, which was great, except that it was not with a factory airbox. Sadly I didn't find the video that mentions that factory airbox until I was done, which cost me a lot of time.
First, the scary part was actually easy - The provided template works perfectly, I used a step bit for the little holes and a jig saw for the big one.

And in case I ever sell it, and the next owner is doing some research, all exposed metal was painted in factory red (because I happened to have the touchup pen, any paint would have been fine)

And the holes all lined up perfectly, so really no drama. Then it's really just a matter of connecting everything, and here's where I went wrong - I didn't realize that with the factory airbox you need to cut the flange off the inlet tube (on the factory box, not the snorkel) so I spent 90 minutes messing with it until I cut if off in frustration, and then found another video where the Z1 guy casually mentions that you need to do that.
End to end 3 hours, I could have easily done the whole thing in 60-90 minutes if I didn't screw up that airbox flange part, but all is good - no whistles, no rattles, no noise and now I have a snorkel that I"m not likely to ever need
