No more Wrangler?

Just to follow up, take a look at the power bands differences from various unreliable and unjustifiable sources. As I often say it is not the absolute values, rather the shape of the curve which more accurately defines drivability.

One thing at which I'm always surprised is I would definitely have guessed the 4.0 to be a steeper curve lower in the RPM range:

The only INTELLIGENT upgrade for the JK as far as drive goes is a diesel motor and gearing....max. 5.13's.

Anything else is for speed junkies, mud boggers and rock crawlers and people who couldn't care less about fuel consumption.

As it stands, and as we are on an appropriate forum for it, the JK and the 3.8 are a more than acceptable motor and vehicle for expedition travel.
Agree 100%.

I a had a 2001 Grand Cherokee with the 4.0 I6 and I have to say that that glorious I6 engine felt more like a dog on my WJ with 3.73 gears and 31" tires than the 3.8 V6 in my JK with 4.10 gears and 32". And just for the records: the 4.7l V8 in my Commander (OK, the Commander has a lot of wight to carry) did not feel any more powerful, but it sure was a whole lot more thirsty...

I like the V6, but I sure would choose a reliable diesel engine anytime over a gas engine.

I just read in JP magazine that International will most likely pick up the Jeep line. Apparently talks have been going on for a while...they already have plans to offer a jeep wrangler diesel (that would be sweet!) as well as increase the product line. This would include a new full size SUV and a truck!

Yea, but at least it got the thread back on topic......

Note to self: do not criticise the 3.8...........

Bah! The 3.8 isn't enough engine for the truck. 4.0 wouldn't have been either.

It's bigger, heavier and has more aero drag than a TJ. It's not rocket science.

Note to self: do not mention the 3.8............

Assuming Jeep stays with Chrysler engines, then a replacement for the 3.8L V6 is on the way.

The new 2011 Grand Cherokee shown at the NY Auto Show in April has a 3.6L V6. This new V6 will find its way into most midsize and large Chrysler products.

In the Grand Cherokee, the new V-6 produces 280 horsepower at 6400 rpm and 260 lb.-ft. of torque at 4800 rpm. Chrysler says 90% of peak torque is available from 1600 to 6400 rpm.

More power is available by switching from multiport fuel injection to direct injection, like GM and Ford are using in their new V6 engines.

The engine management system can de-activate one bank of 3 cylinders when cruising. This improves mpg a little.

The best technology Jeep brings to the table for potential suitors is the Pentastar (Mercedes designed) engine. The future owner of Jeep will most likely have rights to this engine line.

Either way, the 3.8 will have to go.

Looking at what Tata has done to Land Rover makes me fear for the Jeep name plate.

Not being a Land Rover guy I haven't kept up on what has been going on with Tata. What have they done to LR?

I hope Jeep ends up in the hands of somebody who will improve the brand.

This is a hard point to get over to a lot of people. The single best modifcation you can do to a JK, especially a 4 door, is to regear it. I have 5.13's and it made a huge difference. It stays in OD very well on the freeway and the cruise is quite useable. And this at 75 mph on our Utah and Colorado freeways. My JK is a Rubicon and in 4Low there is never a lack of power offroad; even when I'm loaded heavy for a long trip.

Well then there was the whole phoenix engine initiative, but the JK probably would be one of the last platforms to see that powerplant line since dependability and ruggedness aka a proven drivetrain is imperative to the wrangler line up. Plus, with Chrysler up on the chopping block who knows what will happen with the new phoenix platform.

In my mind the Jeep brand is the most valuable asset Chrysler has. Jeep will certainly survive somewhere whereas I don't see anything else in a Chrysler showroom I'd want to own aside from maybe a Challenger.

I also don't see why modest sized stand alone dealers wouldn't fly. Both Land Rover dealers in Alberta are stand alone and appear to be doing quite fine moving maybe 1 unit to every 30 or 40 Jeep products sold, if not more. We're getting a club off the ground here in our region and I'm suddenly astonished how many Jeeps there are around and was stunned by the turnout for our first official monthly meeting only by word of mouth and postings on the forum sites of other Alberta Jeep clubs.
