It was my impression that coatings don't stick that well to galvanizing they do stick better to phosphate washes though. I believe that the SD racks had a phosphate wash of some sort.

A while back I ordered their rack, ladder, sliders and some extra bars to go across the rack to mount my tent on. Don't deal with them if you can.

I ordered the limb risers with the rack but when I got the rack it didn't have the risers installed. It took them about a month and a half to get them to me. Also the bars I wanted needed to be flush mount with the top of the rack, which I explained. But when I received them, the brs sat on top and where held in place by cable clamps.

Besided all that the rack, ladder and sliders where nicely built. The mounting hardware for the ladder needed to be replaced. I haven't had the rack or ladder rust yet. And I didn't install the sliders because their to heavy for me (trying to keep the disco lite).

You need a specific primer designed to adhere to Galv. Any competent body shop can spray it for you.

If you use a normal primer then the paint will peel. Badly. Like the paint on my breakfast.

Why wouldn't you just buy the rustoleum galv. primer at ace, and save your behind?

Does anyone out here in Southern Cali have an SD rack I can see? I really want to compare one to the rack I have.

Checkout Equipt. www.equipt1.com, Paul is the owner. We're running their racks on all our LR3's and they're by far the best solution available. Made in South Africa they're the bees-knees. If your looking for a rack your going to use there simply isn't a better one out there IMO.

Hi,

So, are we saying that the quality of the new racks is not up to scratch ?

I want a custom short rack for my D2 with the protective frame around the front driving lights. They had quoted me but now I'm not convinced....

Any other US vendors who make custom racks for D2's ?

Cheers,
Andy

I have seen a recent rack from them on an 03 Disco- it was bad. Real bad.
Cruise used car dealers until you find a truck with the rack you want. Offer the sales manager cash for it and explain how between garage clearance and wind noise, they'll never sell the truck with the rack still on it. Then make a cash offer and mention that you don't need a receipt. I've done it three times now and it worked every time. Most I've paid for a rack is $800- and that had four Hella lamps on it and was 2 years old.

Despite being one of the voices encouraging a re-examination of roverracks roofracks, I have to say I'll never be a paying customer again. They did some custom work for me when they were back in Portland. The guys they had doing fabrication back then were aweful, but so was the supervision (quality control). Even if they have different guys doing the fabrication, the owners themselves just don't pay attention to quality, don't demand it from their employees, and hide behind "no refund" policies. I second the suggestion to find a used one.

I'd hoped that since they are now providing racks to Land Rover that their QC would have improved. The one newer rack that I saw was much better quality than my old one, but it sounds like that was the exception and not the norm.

imo the best rack available for both Discos and Defenders can be had through Rovers North by way of Brownchurch NOT the racks you see on the RN website! The racks they can order and once made similar racks to which can be seen here:

they are made for function and versatility.

They made the Defender CT racks

There's a "Genuine" rack offered in the UK that *might* be a Brownchurch, might not... but it's a basket that doesn't follow the stepped roof line. It's not as sexy as the SD, but if the Brownchurch style is appealing- this one from LR is very very similar and already in the USA without waiting for the slow boat from the homeland. They run $775.

I picked my SD up recently for $600. I was at the shop getting a window fixed and just asked them if they knew anyone who was selling one. They had a number for a guy who had been trying to sell his for months. He had bought from a dealership and had it mounted for about a month before he realized the drastic drop in gas mileage and increased wind noise. He was selling it for $750 and when I went up to see it I simply asked him if he'd come any lower. He replied "low as I can go is $600." Next thing I knew I'm on my way to the bank to make a withdrawal! The wife was not happy. Ask around - that's my best advice for finding an SD rack, you'd be surprised at the number of soccer moms and banker dads who don't know what they actually have on their discos.

any details?

this is the ultimate rack - http://www.brownchurch.co.uk/images/DISCO-98-EXT.jpg

form should follow function

if you rely on aesthetics then a SD rack or RR might be for you, they sure do look sexy but they don't hold a lot of stuff but they might hold enough for most.

I'd rather have something with space, rust proof, durable, and with ample room for storage.

Certainly you don't want to much weight up there but depending on your set up, your adventure, your family/passenger size it is worth exploring every option!

Hannibals are another good choice. sboada on here loves his, as do most hannibal owners. Those things are stout too. Now personally, I love the SD and have outfitted it w/ the farmtek kennel flooring. I've got a great flooring base now to stow gear - whether its in a pelican, single or double jerry cans, etc.
