Pizza Cutter tires...

What year truck are you referencing? I've had a wide variety of tires on my '88 over the years - up to the current 33 x 12.5 MTZs. I think that 33x10.5s on Gen 2 trucks are really good, and really don't need a lift to run them (maybe a little torsion bar tweek to set ride height level front to back)

My Montero is a 1997 LS. I'm a bit worried about rubbing with 32x11.50 on stock wheels given the LS doesn't have the 1" body lift of the SR. I guess this would also apply to 33x10.50r15.

Sure seems to be some major misconceptions on skinny tires out there. Your little motero or what have you, you will be perfectly safe with a 225 or 235 or 255. Many a full size van have and do run a 225. F250/350 came stock with 235 for years. I ran 235/85/16 on my 04 f350 came with 265/75/16 I run 255/85/16 on my land cruiser. But then I like skinny tires I grew up before the fat tire faze hit. Your running a truck not a sports car.

Hello Gents!

Finally have a chance to give some feedback; good stuff out there.

Just so you know... I plan on 50% road driving, 50% off-road on 15x6 wheels with a 2" body lift performed on my 1998 Montero.

Ground I drive on consists of primarily hard packed soil, some sand (use the truck mostly to get to beaches with no pavement), and some water maybe; might cross mud every now and them, but no bogs/pits... not into that.

Skinny tires have worked in the past for many, many years, and I think they are less stressful to all truck components, along with some extra millage related to gas savings versus wider tires.

That is pretty much it... no crazy off road stuff, since I am not really interested in "mistreating" it... just want the capability to go off road, lower PSI, and get to the beach I want.

Thanks!

And FYI, you do not need a lift on any SR or a 98-00 model to run 33's in any width, this has been covered, discussed, and beat to death numerous times.

I'm running 30x9.5 on a 15 inch stock steel wheel. Good for overlanding and mild offroading, but not rockcrawling. They are very skinny but not a tall tire. 33x9.5 used to be available in an AT but they're very hard to come by nowadays. That means for a 15 inch rim you're looking at 31x10.5, 32x10.5 or 33x10.5. Pizza cutters on a 16 inch rim you're looking at 235/85 or 255/85, the former is 30-31" tall and the latter is about 33" tall.

So far I haven't seen talk about tire clearance on the gen 2.5 LS with stock suspension. I'm interested to know how 33x10.50r15 or 32x11.50r15 will fit my ride (97 LS, cranked torsion bars).I could prob find a better thread to ask in though...

97 is not a gen 2.5, it is simply a gen 2 with the SOHC 3.5 engine.

Thanks! That's the look I am going for, but with the extra 2" of travel I now have with the body lift kit I installed last week.

Also, got an estimate for the BF Goodrich all Terrain KO (5 tires, installed, balanced and aligned) for $1000. Tire prices down here are crazy, but again, for 5 tires, I can't complain... the manager told me up front the pricing $1200), and before I was to leave, he called me back, and told me since I was ordering 5 tires, he would give me a $200 discount so I made sure I went back to order them when the wheels were ready.

Got 33x10.50's on my zj. I get 17 mpg on the interstate pulling my popup at 60.

I think the most popular size here for factory 15" wheels is 33x10.50. They fit the wheel wells of most Monteros without a lift and are fairly skinny for good mileage and better bite but tall for good clearance and a decent size contact patch when aired down. If you move up to 16" wheels the 235/85 and 255/85 sizes open up the possibilities.
