Range Rover Classic Experiance?

Cam is alittle on the serious side, same with heads. Not a afternoon project.

Intake? No its easy. Thanks for the links.

There are more than just one or two cams available. D&D has a few different grinds. I have a Crower street grind in my garage destined for an Olds HC 3.5 Ive slowly been putting together for another project. Running a bigger cam and other modifications can be done, even on an efi truck, with the right fueling adjustment which is easily done on 14CUX trucks, moreso than later GEMS trucks. As for intakes, there are modifications that can be done to the trumpets inside. Ive even seen a dual entry intake manifold to get more air in there. Your point about no aftermarket support is an erroneous one.

OP, spend your time looking for the early ones. They rusted really badly so finding a clean one is pretty tough. There is a two door on eBay right now. I remember that one being for sale on LRE for a long time about a year ago. It seems like someone bought it, relocated it to Texas and now its for sale again. Whats your budget? I know of one you might be interested in.

get 1989 model and u will be very happy you did,

its the only year with 3.9 and non abs but any of them is good 87 88 89 look in los angeles craigs list if u want absolutely rust free truck

Actually base model and Hunter RRC up to 1992 didn't have ABS. I have a 1992 with the 3.9, no ABS and no sway bars. It is a base model, not Hunter.

Thats right! I completely forgot about the Hunter editions. Those also have no sunroof, right? I think I have only ever seen a couple online and never seen one in the flesh. Pretty hard to find.

Yes. No sunroof, no leather, no front air dam, maybe no power seats, I can't recall . . .

I'm sure there aren't many Hunter RRC's around. How hard would it be to swap in the manual windows and do a sunroof delete for one of these?

Ive read a lot about the 617 swap and talked to the person making the kit on the phone a couple of times and a few others who live and breathe MB diesels and I am not convinced that it is a good option for a truck as heavy as a Disco/ RRC is. If you want to talk about a motor with NO aftermarket support, the 617 is your choice. 120 hp/ 200 lb ft is about it in a healthy motor.

There is some.

Sunroof delete? Can you weld? If not, just seal it up and never use it.

Headroom is usually the reason for wanting to be rid of the sunroof. The non-sunroof models have a couple inches more room than the sunroof models, which can make all the difference for someone over 6'. That's why I did mine at least. I'm 6' 2" tall and used to have to slouch with the seat reclined a good bit just to fit, and my hair would still rub. Now I have 'plenty' of headroom sitting bolt upright, it just lets me know when I need a haircut.

My perfect rangie would be:

early 80's 2 door with the wonky steering wheel, '99 GEMS motor management and heads on a 4.6L top-hat lined block , LT95, ABS brakes from a '91-95, > '91 fuel tank, sunroof lid from > '90, wolf rims with Michelin 7.50's, AEU 2522 CV's with the 110 spindles and HD drive flanges, refurbished interior bits imported from England, SD roll cage, Devon front bumper with recessed Warn 8274 and a highly attractive brunette in the passenger seat.

Thing is, every time I go onto craigslist I'm sorely disappointed.

Here's what drives me crazy about all these threads about what vehicle to buy when new folk are looking for their first rig: THEY ARE ALL THE SAME TRUCK WITH SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT PARTS.

D1, DII, RRC - I don't care. Buy the nicest you can afford and sort out the nits for that model year, later. They all have warts. Except the 2004 Discovery II. Apparently this thing is the best rig Land Rover ever gave birth to. Until you bolt on the front t-case housing to your buddy's 2003 DII. Some people had trouble with the engine in that year. but we can't verify the numbers because all we really know is what we read on web forums. So a 2004 must be the way to go. But lets not get into this right now.

Don't want sunroofs? Fine - take the lid off an '87 in the junkyard and put it onto your '92.

Do you want "the better t-case"? Great! Because you're going to be installing one, anyway. The 87 and 88 trucks are getting long in the tooth and need bearings. Any junkyard Disco I will serve you well, and with so many going the way of the dodo bird the swap is as inexpensive as ever. You can't buy a crappy TJ for the price of a B/W Rangie and a full D1 donor for parts.

If you do find a 2-dr, awesome. Swap in a 4.2L or a GEMS 4.0. That 3.5 with the carb sucks.

Don't want sway bars? They unbolt in about 20 minutes. Give yourself an hour if drinking beer.

What is this? That ABS system is real bad, eh? Have you people driven an ABS Rangie that's working properly, and compared it to a non-ABS truck on larger tires and full armor?

Being ran off from a really nice '93~'95 LWB because of the air suspension? Don't! They're just springs! And the air-tank works great for a vi-air and dual ARB's.

Set your budget and look for the Rover that seems to need the least work, because even that one is going to give you fits. All of these nuances between year models don't make nearly as much of a difference as starting with a nicer truck that deserves to be built up.

cheers,
-ike

There is what looks like a LWB 89ish RRC here in Sevierville. I had a brief look but that was all. Otherwise I would be loking for a way to buy it. PM me if you want details. I'll contact the owner or get you a number. Its silver with brushguard rear tail ight guards, original 3 spoke rims, and dog barrier. Thats all that I remember and I didn't look for rust or check the rear hatch but can if you want.

I had a 1988 Toyota 4runner that I bought brand new and put 230k miles on it before selling it for a 1988 RR Classic. I wish I had kept the 4runner simply because it was so damn trustworthy but I have to admit I enjoyed the driving experience much better in the RR. Love the sitting position, off road performance, comfort, easy to work on, smooth ride on road, can sleep in the back and the 100" wheelbase seems to be the perfect length.

I didn't like, gutless on highway performance, headliner sucks and eventually needs replacing, minor electrical stuff like seat switches.

I love the RR Classic and wish I still had mine, but something had to go to get my 130:)

Roof panels are bolt on and easy to change. Hard part is finding one without a sunroof this side of the pond. On the other side only the Vogue or higher models had sunroofs. Some early 2 doors had fabric roll back sections in the roof.

How's it going guys

Recently I purchased a 1st gen Toyota 4runner that needed a rebuilt motor along with some other things done to it which was more than I wanted to do. (I've always wanted a RRC between the years of 82-89 but I rarely see them in my area. If you know someone who is looking to sell a roller or a fully working RRC please PM me):sombrero:

Anyway what are some common issues to look out for with these Range Rovers? I was planing to use this as a daily driver to and from school/work and might possibly be looking to do a Cummins swap later down the line (12v from a 93 Dodge W250). Any comment about experiance with these welcome and thanks

Give Roverdude a call. Looks like he has a RRC in your year range for $700
