I'm of a like mind with Lance and Tacodoc (and maybe others) who would like to have a place to kick around some of the critical issues of the day with a group of people with which I already have at least one thing in common. I think one of the fundamental issues with our society is that we don't seem to be able to talk about these matters in a civil manner. Without that, there is no hope of ever bridging the divide that exists currently. Perhaps ExPo can be a place where we can begin to forge a common understanding through civil discussion. Maybe that's hopelessly optimistic. In any event, I would like to see it happen.

That said, I understand the concern that it may create additional work for the mods to police such a forum. I am a frequent participant on the California gun forum Calguns, where discussion of political topics is tolerated more than on ExPo. Even there, where you might think the common interest in firearms would lead to more consensus, there is at times vigorous debate that requires the intervention of the mods from time to time. I'm afraid there are no easy answers here.

While that may lead to being challenged or even dismissed it is actually a good thing, it keeps you humble. Humility is in sort order these days.

...no matter how polar opposite a person is from you sometimes they grant some insight to a view point that you hadn't ever consider.

I like hearing opinions that differ greatly from mine. Like-minded people. Not for me. I don't need validation. I already know I'm right.:ylsmoke: Challenge my beliefs, please. I want to see the world through your eyes.

A free-thinking section would be wonderful. I've learned so much here. Further, it may, may just take some of the load off the mods by corralling what would be considered questionable threads/posts in one area. The Jungle? Guns N' Roses stuck in my head. Oh dear.

If not, there's always FRDB.

And another thing, I especially enjoy hearing the opinion of our members from other countries. It adds so much to the conversation.

I'd buy anyone here a beer :sombrero: However much tempers may rise, a keyboard can be a fairly feable way of communicating. Over a beer I would be fairly sure no-one would get half as excited, and the discussion could continue :ylsmoke:

And noone would be silenced by mods skeered of the discussion

Scott Brady - This Jungle section is a terrible idea - what on earth does it have to do the EXPO mission? These guys are just hot to spew & are bored with all the expo related stuff...
Stay focused man...EXPO is in danger of getting unfocused as it is with so many sections. If anything EXPO needs some trimming...IMHO.

Keep up the good work & keep politics & religion out of EXPO! Thanks. Moe

On the contrary. If you look at the proponents of the Jungle you will see that they are the folks who actually go out Overlanding, hike, kayak, camp, mountain bike, mountain climb, build cool rigs and come to Expo to share pictures and stories with the folks who are new to Overlanding.

After a good discussion with the moderators (most of them have a lot more experience than I) and Scott, I am sorry to say that The Jungle is not going to happen.

There are several good reasons for that.

One that resonates the most to me was that it has been tried on other forums and the results have not been good - some of our moderators have first hand experience with it, as they were part of a similar effort on totally different forums.

So if you want to discuss politics and religion, I am afraid you will need to find another forum.

This one is going to stay focused on Overlanding and Vehicle-Dependant expeditions.

If no Jungle...

Sometimes it seems as if you can't Expo in the USA unless you're armed which is not good news to non-residents who long to travel there! :peepwall:

A bit of explanation as to why your trip needed a gun would help me at least :)

Personally I'll just have to stick to my Mrs armed with her tactical frying pan :Wow1:

I know from the outside looking in, it may seem like it but, where not all armed. Many folks in the U.S. make assumptions about certain states because of a few cockamamie state laws that get national exposure. There's good folks all over the states, in every state.

Yep, while people may carry guns that doesn't mean they use them. Kinda like a big jack, first aid kid, extra fuel, winches, etc. You hope you don't have to use it but if you do you'd rather be safe.

If America was as dangerous as some people imagine we'd have a lot of membership turnover on this site.
