The expensive wrench is uber-kool, but lots of folks use ordinary gloves, strap wrenches and oil filter pliers when absolutley needed. There is a really nice custom wrench one from these guys: http://www.jagmte.com/

I do recall a date code molded in. Looks sort of like an analog clock face. The folks at Scepter in Canada are exceedingly nice so maybe they can tell you how to read it.

Cancel my last statement, I ordered a 4-pack of NATO cans from Cheaper Than Dirt.

They don't clearly say "new" or "used" but I am guessing these are new and manufactured for them to sell. If so, I am wondering how they get away with it. I have four of the NATO cans from Deutche Optik http://www.deutscheoptik.com/product_info.php?products_id=1718 but they have been stamped "not for fuel use" to get around the regulations.

I'm not sure there's a difference, but did you notice a potentialy key word in the title? I added the emphasis.

I am wondering how these compare in quality to the NATO or Deutche Optik cans. Anyone ?

I'm not saying this in an attempt to circumvent the "law", but what would (in theory) stop me from having a Canuck friend buy some new MFC's and ship them to me? AFAIK it wouldn't be illegal for them to ship empty plastic containers across the border, being that I could technically be using them for anything.

I don't know "officially" but am guessing that regulation only affects the retail sale of new cans. Plenty of guys have picked up cans in Canada and brought them back home without issue.

Great, just wanted to make sure you weren't surprised. I think these may have the wider mouth, so the spouts aren't interchangable with the "other" NATO cans. Seems like a good deal to me.

Good to know if anyone was expecting to use their old nozzles. I highly recommend using a Super Siphon to avoid compatibility issues. Takes less than two minutes to transfer 20L.

I got my shipment of 4. They carry manufacture dates of 1987 and 1989. The are well used but servicable. Looks like a lot of UV exposure on the upper surfaces. All that is left of the red straps that hold the cap to the tank is the ring around the tank neck. Seals look to be in ok condition. Happy to have them as spares, but not worried anyone is going to want to steal one off the back of my rig.

My brother and nephew are in the National Guard and have both been on tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. They tell me that it isn't unusual to see huge lots of the Scepters sit out in the field for years. That must be some tough-*** plastic.

I cancelled my order with them. After about two months of waiting for them to ship I gave up.

I got 4 from Hero and they arrived just as advised used in about 7/10 condition, mostly UV faded. Needed to replace all the cap straps and seals (cans where diesel cans). Very happy to save 1/2 over 4 new ones.

Great link for the spout storage DIY. Also need to get a wrench.
