Well, after thinking and talking and thinking and talking.......x10000000. The sensible rig for us is what I was jonesin over about 3 or 4 months ago. A colorado Diesel z71 crew short box. I have my F150 pretty well sold, and If I sell my JK in the next couple of months then the order is being placed. White z71 crew cab with 5ft box. I am going to also add the topper, Interior acessories to the topper, baja kits lift with kings, 285s on XD wheels to the financing plan. I think they will have 0% for a while here. I am good friends with the local dealer here, so doing anything I want to the truck will be no problem.

The range is the biggest deal for us. Being able to go visit our son in University with our JK is a three tank of gas affair, with the collie, it would be almost a one tank affair. PLUS Diesel is 30c a liter cheaper here at the moment compared to gas. The savings is enormous. Plus doing our off road adventures will be better without having to backtrack for gas like we do during certian trips we go on.

I have the GMC Canyon diesel and it is a great truck. I am averaging 30+ mpg highway with a tank range of 550-600 miles. I think you will be very pleased with the Colorado.

Have you also looked at the Ram ecodiesel? Seems like MPG is on-par with the Canyon's (maybe slightly less). But all the extra comforts of a full-size. :)

You do know they are testing the Colorado Zr2 right? You may want to wait and see if its anything more than skid plates and a small lift. The concept was amazing.

 how'd "tease" get here? :sombrero:

Funny your thoughts are like mine.
I struggle with short bed vs long bed decision. Wife would only be happy with the GMC Denali interior. I wish Chevy had left its 1980s Pontiac interiors in storage for the Colorado. I like the looks of the Colorado better.

Ha ha, touché.

By the way, did you ever decide to get yourself a real truck yet?

:D

Oh...I do keep on looking at F150's. I mean....gawd damn for under $30K you can a lot of truck for similar priced Tacomas. Looking at Ecodiesels too.

BUT! as my mind works...as always ;) ...will they go 300,000 miles without much fuss? Not sure I would want to own a turbo vehicle out of warranty. I like to get at least 15 years out of a vehicle...since I am such a cheap SOB. ;) know that goes against what most of Americans do...seems like most people get bored at 3 years and trade-in for something else. The OP did say he has A.D.D. ;)

Sure Tacomas cost a little more for what they are, little bit less of a truck....but man, do they last. $25K gets me an old man slow SR, with anvil like reliability.

Eco diesels are pricy and the rear suspension makes for lousy load capacity. I was excited about them till I saw the load rating.

Think if you build them like a Tacoma (read: go light...and no, don't slap a FWC on it either, all of those Tacos with FWC's are overloaded)...if you keep it fairly simple. Say like a topper and a hard shell RTT...you might be ok. Or if AT ever builds a fullsize Habitat.

The Tradesman crew cab models I am looking at can be had for under $30K, seems not expensive with today's truck prices. Found a couple RCLB's around the $25K mark.

On my work commute, occasionally I see a white RCLB with a Cab-Hi topper on it, with a mild 2.5" lift...black wheels. Looks low-key and sharp at the same time. Kinda diggin' it. And to think he is getting 30 mpg in a pickup, to boot. hmmm...maybe.

The GM's look "ok". Prices are starting to come down, but no diesel in the extra-cab, think AT Habitat, and the ability to sleep in the bed with the lid closed when the weather is really foul or stealth camping, why I don't care for CCSB's. Then there are the CCLB's, might as well get a full size then.

A friend in the construction business has had a couple F150's, XL (bare bones), 3.5 V6 (non-ecoboost)--zero issues to 250k miles, then sold off (maximizing write offs necessitates new trucks in his line of business). Tradesman looks good, too. I'm not partial to the small back seat space of GMC's, but if that doesn't matter, their base package isn't bad, either, and in my experience, GM engines have performed well. Lots of good choices, and all of the full-size trucks get the same or better MPG than the Taco's. :D

The reliability thing is probably all about nothing on the normally aspirated engines. No way I would own a gas or diesel turbo out of warranty though. At the end of the day, fuel economy isn't too much of a concern, yearly fuel cost between 20 and 30 mpg, isn't all that much. (even with me being so cheap, I can deal with that difference).

Don't have the need to haul people, do like extra cabs for gear storage, XCSB works quite well for me...really like the Ford with the flat floor and 170º(?) opening rear doors...be great for tossing MX bags back there. The Ram Regular Cabs have a decent amount of room behind the seat...not sure if it is big enough for a gear bag. Tundras are, not putting up with 13-15 mpg...so they are off the list.

Tacoma SR 4 banger...you can probably milk 25 hwy out of it...be an ok daily...but loaded down and pulling my moto trailer with a couple bikes...don't think it will work for weekend/multi-week trip vehicle. It does have the manual trans. To get a manual with a V6, I have to spend $32K to get that...well might as well buy a fullsize with a V8 at that price...

Grrrrr....no one really builds what I want. Hate spend money on stuff I only "kinda" like. maybe drop a LS into a 2nd gen Tacoma... ;)

Have lifted a couple Canyons for our local dealer. They are looking to lift a diesel next for the lot. Trucks look good and seem to be decent movers for some dealers. Diesels do not sit very long on the lot from our conversations with sales

They fit the bill for us totally...Don't want full sized. Sort of want Jeep'ish dimensions. so 4 door short box is perfect. As for the ecodiesel, they do NOT get similar milage to the collie diesels, not around here anyways, and 2 already lost their engines in the small town we live in, so I will pass on the dodge.

the z71 will be fine, I am putting the bajakits King resi setup on it so zr2 will pale in comparison.
