I would get a Land Rover Repair Operation Manual as soon as you can. While not the easiest read, it's completely stuffed with all sorts of invaluable information.

If there's gas in the filter, there should be gas in the carb.
I have some of the older cartridges that look solid rather than the mesh, and seem to filter finer. I actually haven't been able to find the specs anywhere on the mesh ones.That's the one. I prefer a regular filter behind it, since they aren't all that fine of a filter, but they do catch the big stuff and provide a useful visual indicator.
