JACKPOT!

Here's an update. My buddy just bought himself a MIG welder. Begin the madness! Looks like we're about to learn how to custom make everything we want for the trucks.

Nah, you still need a plasma cutter, mandrel bender, chop saw, torch, this, that, and the other.... Though a welder and a reciprocating saw when used with a drill and nuts/ bolts works wonders. I will be buying a MIG very soon.

Correction ... all we need is a plasma cutter (being bought tomorrow) and a mandrel bender.

Apparently when you show your wife if you just buy the tools to do it vs. the cost of buying the whole part, then explaining to them that the money saved goes to their shopping fund .... amazing things happen.

Continuing the budget build ....

I added a SAAAWWWEEETTT pair of "Baja Tough Off Road Lights" from Advanced Auto Parts. I have no idea why, but I actually liked the looks of them. I know ... make fun of me. But it wouldn't be a budget build if I went and bought expensive lighting options, right? In other news, my wife has banned me from going shopping alone ...

Anyways, mounted them ... I'll hook them up later ... too lazy.

There's your picture ... so you can't tell me it's a worthless build thread.

Budget builds are great!I love that feeling when you pull off a great mod that doesn't break the bank! And yeah, I am on probation in the shopping area after buying a $1k set of "used" wheels for my bicycle. But hey, they were $2.4k new!

So we're finalizing the plans/ideas on how to mount my winch inside my bumper.

Last things last, gotta get a winch to fit. I know you're supposed to get one with at least a 1.5 capacity for your fully loaded rig. I know with that plus some extra smush room, that comes out to a 12k winch. Being a budget build ... I can't do that.

Here's the set of questions.

1.) Can I get away with a 9k or 9.5k winch as long as I keep my truck and accessories on the skinny end?

2.) For the winch mount, we're gonna put it behind the bumper above the skid plate. We know we have to get some 3/8" steel plating for the plate and yada yada yada. Question is, what's the mounting solution most recommended? As in, what's the best way to attach it to the frame rails?

Also, off topic question:

I have a buddy who has a 91 Jeep YJ Renegade. The thing is so cool, and a ton of fun. Huge old plastic fender flares, it's a Canuk model, so the speedo is in km/h. It's a manual, straight 6, and we just installed a posi-lok system in it. He offered to sell it to me when it comes time for him to PCS/Deploy. He hasn't really wheeled it yet, since it's been 2wd ... but I told him he'll change his mind about selling it real fast. I'd keep the Montero for sure, but a little convertible beach buggy would also be fun. What do you guys think of that? I would ask my off road club, but since they're a bunch of Jeep owners, we all know what they're answer will be.

1) an 8000lb winch will work for our rigs just fine, so anything 8 or greater is good.

2) I looked at the possibility of placing my winch in said position and I kept finding reasons not to. 1- the clutch handle will be impossible to reach 2- more susceptible to water submergence and high probability of solenoid issues if it is not completely water proof. 3- harder to maintain it properly hidden in the front in that manner 4- higher susceptibility to grime building up on and around it 5- you cannot see the winch thus making it difficult to tell if you have an issue with it of any sorts 6- mounting it in there would be a PITA.

IMHO, I'd leave the Jeep alone. Something like that will consume your bank account if you intend to use it. Trust me! Issues up the wazzu. Why is it only 2wd? ....See.... :snorkel:

So, get you a cheap winch bumper, modify it, hook it up with a good winch of 8000lb or greater and have not one worry of reliability issues. KISS theory works very well mija.

Now you need to go on a trail ride so you can get "I love my Monty"feeling in ya.

Ok ... I'll take that advice and run with it.

As for the trail ride ... I know ... I'm itching so bad. It's my birthday weekend ... I think I might go.

Well ... the weather here in NW Florida is absolutely horrible. Rain rain and more rain. People driving about 10 miles an hour (stupid snowbirds!) ... and then some ************ in a Montero doing about 60! :victory:

Still wheeling tomorrow, the trails should be completely unrecognizable and still basically rivers in the morning. I can't wait. Pretty much all the Jeepers backed out because their tops leak in the rain ... I told them it sounded like a personal problem.

I will take plenty of pictures while I'm out, giving praise and adding to the mythical legend that is our glorified minivan.

Today was awesome! Hydro-locked the same YJ twice. Got a newer FJ good and stuck, and went places a 2009 Jeep TJ couldn't go.

All the meanwhile, I was perfectly comfortable in the Monty. Victory! Plenty of good pictures and embarrassing ones at that to come.
