SOFpirate's 1996 Montero LS buildthread.

IIRC it can spin in opposite directions with a badly worn LSD where the clutch plate no longer work properly... But you should verify that's correct.

There may also be stickers in the driver side door jamb area or a plate on the diff housing indicating LSD additive is required.

So the truck is in the shop for the week.

I decided to just break down and finish the engine rebuild. I started getting signs of head gasket leaks, and valve seal leaks. It was just that time to do it before it got bad. The only thing we're really waiting on now is the new head set (which is better than buying head gaskets according to my 16 year Mitsu tech). I'm pretty excited about it, though. It'll be a brand new truck. After that, looking to redo the rack, seeing as the wife saw all the Yakima setups and pretty much smacked me. So any inputs on where/what to get for that would be awesome.

Also, it seems as if our exhaust system is a little restrictive, is there anything you guys have thought about doing or have done to your exhaust systems?

Well, got the truck back from the shop post-rebuild.

We had a valve guide scare for a second, but it looks like there isn't an issue.

As a testament to the all great and mighty Montero, the techs said that any other engine in the same shape wouldn't have even turned over. They also attested to the damn near (sorry for language, but enthusiastic is an understatement for me right now) invincibility of these drivetrains.

Now! Back to working, gotta re-organize my build list to see where I am and what I need to do next...

Headed out to "Off Road Fest 2012" in Alabama. Should be interesting.

Got the good ole' Monty packed and ready to go. It's funny how the Jeepers have to pull a trailer. I still have plenty of room, and I'm bringing my whole family!

Pictures to come.

JGC's have lots of room but other problems like cheap flimsy interiors LOL. Looking forward to a trip report and pictures afterwards.

I know!!!! I gotta get going on it. I just picked up a winch, and will be doing a "custom" mod for mounting it, and also thinking about creating myself a rear bumper, if not just ripping the old one clean off.

Alright. Abbreviated trip report from Boggs and Boulders. Located in Andalusia, Alabama.

Not a bad park, 1000+ acres of do whatever the hell you want land. Prices are reasonable. If you want, just google them and you can see. No set campgrounds, it's where ever you decide to pass out.

Now, onto the juicy stuff.

4 main rigs went up. Myself, a 99 Jeep XJ Cherokee, 89 YJ Wrangler, and a 94 (maybe?) YJ Wrangler. The 1.5 hour drive up there wasn't terribly bad. The only hiccup that we ran into was that both Jeeps started to run hot driving on the road for so long and hauling all their stuff up and down the Southern Alabama hills. As we stopped, one of them decided to burp up all it's transmission fluid. Eventually, though ... we made it.

Did a little bit of afternoon wheeling before heading back to camp for food. Typical exploring trails and whatnot. Great land to wheel all over though, highly recommended. Of course, people got stuck, particularly the ones who's vehicles names started with a "J" and ended with a "P". Granted, one incident in the Jeep affectionately known as "Papa Smurf" what just for S&G's. We told the guy about a mud hole where everybody got stuck last time, and feeling left out, he just had to get himself stuck as well. For size reference, he was on 38's. Not a small hole when you see the picture. Did a little bit of rock crawling, and watched the ridiculous rock buggy competition. That was impressive. Not too many pictures of our rig, just because the only camera in the group happened to be in our truck. Enjoy the pics.

All in all, it was an excellent weekend. All the trails are passable, and every obstacle has a way around it. But, I sure did use the heck out of my skid plates here and there.

Question:

For a while now, I've been getting a clicking sound coming from my front wheels. I'm thinking it's my CV joints, as well ... 200k of hard driving later ... wouldn't be surprised if they needed to get replaced. What do you guys think? If so, how much of a PITA would it be to do it? I can find parts easy now. Just gotta make sure it's the right ones.

It may be. Lift the front end (block the rear tires), be sure it's in 2WD and turn the front wheels and check where the sound is coming from before investing in a set of CV's.

Awesome! Speaking of which, I ripped my outer boot on my new cv axle while out this past weekend. Gotta put a new one on before it gets contaminated. Can't wait to see your build up.

Ok. Thanks for that. I'll do that.

Also, where in the world would one get a hold of the coil spacers?

Get them for the Toyota sequoia. They are called spring spacers or leveling kit. 2 inches is what you want. For a 2000 sequoia I believe. If you have an eBay account I'd use it as I got mine for 60 bucks.

You can get them spacers from 4 wheel parts also.
