The "Expedition hat" thread

Tilley hats have always served me well. Being a lot more conscious about the sun damage I have been exposed to all these years I prefer something with a wide brim. All their products have held up well for me and being able to throw them in the wash is a bonus.

I have always admired this hat.

It is probably phenomenally expensive. I've never priced it for fear of sticker shock. :Wow1: I like a good brim. I've had plenty of sun burn over the years and need to use caution now.

Here's the link to the maker if you have more money than me. http://www.randhats.com/cgi-bin/randscat/126-Safari.html

Military style "boonie" hats. Can find them cheap. Keep the sun and rain off. Can be stashed in a pack easily. An d come in many "stylish" colors..:sombrero:

Tilley Airflo has been on my top for the past several years. Tough, durable, washes easily in the wm, cool in the heat, etc.

Akubra Hats

If you like the Safari hat shown earlier in this thread, you might find the Australian Akubra line to your liking. I bought the Akubra "Cattleman" for an African hunting safari. It's a fairly wide-brimmed as I do not like to have a lot of sun on my neck and face. I had been buying from an on-line store called Noggintops. I recently discovered you can get the same hats from an Australian on-line company for half the price!

Here's the link to Everything Australian...

Rand's is sort of expensive but they sell quality products. When I lived in MT we'd stop in there once in awhile. They are really really good about fitting hats.

Like many of you, I am a ballcap kind of guy, I have around 20 but only 3 or 4 get regular wear. My mtn hardwear and my mtn khaki caps are my two favorites now. I have a Outdoor Research Seattle Sombrero that I use in wet weather. It makes my head sweat too much sometimes though maybe due to the gore tex? Anyway, that is what I use.

I have many baseball caps too, but the current one I wear at work when it rains is the Overland Journal one.

For a boondockin' one, I got one from a local place that does embroidery work for clothing.
They do my work jackets and pullovers for Boeing that I wear.

Here is the hat they did up for me, but I want one of the safari types above.
