Thought about getting Tacoma, then a Wrangler, now not so sure..

To my knowledge Jeep has never had to recall and replace an entire line of trucks because of prematurely rusting out frames. Even the old first gen 4Runners and pickups would crack their frames at the front rear spring hangers due to fatigue rust.

So, Toyotas are far from magically awesome. They have their merits, like all marques.

IMO it seems like the Toyota guys have a skewed sense of Jeep reliability because they compare the old first gen 22RE Toy mini-trucks with carbed CJs and YJs of the time. It's not the 1980s any more. Things have changed. Any EFI era Jeep is a good vehicle IMO. Not perfect but plenty good, like most marques.

:sombrero: Yea RM and strangly enough, mine has a FULL BOXED frame with solid axles and lockers Fore & Aft

It will haul well over 600 lbs and that just levels it out, while pulling my trailer !!

18 months and nearly 44,000 miles on mine with zero reliability issues.

I can't speak for Toyota's, but I do have an 05 Jeep Rubicon that I abuse on the street. It's my daily driver, and I put between 80 and 120 highway miles on a day. When you add offroad trips to the commuting miles I have over 100k miles on the clock. In my opinion they are very reliable.

Hey guys. I've just started to read up on reports of new JKs and leaky hard/soft tops. Many people having to go multiple trips to the dealership and the issue still did not get resolved. I'm wondering what the true percentage of units with unfixable leaky roof is..

Old data. This was a problem with some of the early production 2007 models IIRC. Like all Internet lore, it is still out there skewing reality. :)

:sombrero: Well ywen, nothings perfect, I've had my hardtop off/"t" tops off and I've installed a full roll cage and Modified the top, because of that--NO LEAKS

As with any new vehicle, some are very good and some never should have gotten outta the box-ya lays yer money and ya takes yer chances

You have to weight the pro's/con's and then-MAKE A DECISION

I don't like the OD button placement and the headlights on with the remote, but to many other benefits far outweigh those little inconveniences

Good luck

I had a 06 Tacoma and have now a JK Unlimited. No complaints about the Tacoma, but I sure prefer my Jeep. Nothing rational, both vehicles have treated me very well, purely emotional. A small 4'x6' ute-trailer takes over the cargo duties of the pick-up bed.

My hard top leaked one time when the seal had sand on it. I cleaned it and treated it to a little silicone and it's never leaked again.
But the headlights sorta suck.
And you really should replace the bumpers.

What is the main advantage of an aftermarket bumper? Say if I don't need brush guard or a winch.

The stock bumpers are made from old cheese and are very easy to dent; I didn't replace mine until the stockers were pretty well thrashed.
Aftermarket bumpers also give you better jacking/recovery points.

I think the stock bumper hate is a bandwagon thing. It's like how you go to some forums, and everyone is complaining about plastic fenders and grille.

I have an 08 JK 4 door with 40K miles on it. It is my daily driver. I love it. It has been very dependable. The only problem I had was with the electric sway bar disco not working due to corrosion at the electrical connection under the Jeep, but that was handled under warranty. I have heard nothing but stories about how Wranglers run forever, and judging by the number of them I have seen on the road here in So Cal, it is true. Good luck making your choice. I looked at Taco's too, but I am too tall for it to be comfortable.

Yeah I test drove a 2010 Taco DC. i found the seat to low to the floor and whilst driving, the front part of the seat bottom wasn't even touching my leg. Is this what you found too?
