I wheel with alot of yodas...so I know the capabilitys...they do fairly well..but the IFS front end is a weakpoint for the extreme traiils..(it is with ALL IFS's..)...they have the rust issues...its just cheaper/thinner metal..its expected..all new vehicles are thinner metal...

now onto jeeps..

got my 08 in 07...2dr w half doors and soft top..auto..40K..not a LICK of trouble...had it out in the woods a few times..but its not my wheeler..so Id didnt treat it like one...impressed with it..and enjoyed it as a daily driver (50miles round trip)..even took 4 adults 1400 miles round trip vacation..no complaints about crampd or uncomfy..was kinda underpowered and downshifted out of overdrive on hills..

with the additions coming to the family (twins)..I needed 5 seatbelts...

so we now have a 09 4dr...6spd..hard doors..soft top..LOVE IT!!..power's like a diffrent engine!!...quieter than the soft doors...drives great...no problems!!

the leaking tops and the brake issues were the 07-early08 models...theyre all fixed now...wont hesitate to drive mine anywhere!!

econonmy!! (didnt add that to the equasion!!)

2dr auto...18-22mpg mixd..more highway..better mileage got 14-16 till the engine got 20,000 miles or so..then it got better!

4dr..manual..18-24mpg..but the engine only has 2K on it...I dont travel much since I got it...yet!

oh the gear issue only applied to the manual tranny right? AUTO stayed the same from 07 thru current?

I can check..but im certin the axle gearing was the same between the 2....just a PROFOUND diffrence from the auto to the 6spd!!

I meant end-user regearing.
I regeared my 3.73 autotrans to 4.56. Stock tires were a claimed 32" diameter but measured shy of 31" ---- new tires are about 32.3", claiming over 33" in literature.

FWIW - I have been looking into a Taco 4Dr or a Jeep Unlimited as well. Being that I am 6'6" and my wife is 6'1", it's pretty obviously our kids are going to grow...

I just test drove the a new Taco. I have always wanted one. The fitment was terrible. My driving position was rather cramped. I was really disappointed. The Jeep however, fit great. A ton of room in the back for the munchkins. We test drove a Sahara, but the obvious choice is the Rubicon. Not only for resale but pure capability out of the box.

As for the "down on power" bit - SuperChips now offers a reprogrammer that works with many aftermarket intakes. I'm sold. Looks like a Red Rock Rubicon is in our future.

JJBiggs,
Look at the FJ Cruiser too.
I'm 6'5" and was as comfy in it as in the JK.

Owned a FJ a couple years ago. Loved it - but the suicide doors were a major PITA with a munchkin in tow. With another on the way, I need those 4 doors.:D

My old FJ. Custom top and all...

FYI

09+ newer they have a mid option!!...

my unlimited came FACTORY with mud tires and rubi shocks...so it LOOKS like a rubi..but without the lockers/tcase

after years of wheelin...I rarelky ever used my doubler...regular low and a standard trans gives you plenty of crawl...the traction control really helps out too..(kinda electronic locker)....wheelspeed needs the traction turned off..but it DOES make a diffrence!!

I would throw an ARB in the front and just pimp mine if It was to be our expedition rig...

I have owned a 2010 DC Taco, a 2012 wrangler unlimited, a 98 XJ and now I have a 2005 LJ. I loved all of them. My Taco was first and it was a beast stock, then I had a 3" ome lift and put 33's under it and it always performed exeptional. I love the taco and if I had the money would have one again. My 2012 JKU was great too, very excellent as a DD. It never recieved a lift but I did get 33's under it with MB72 wheels and had zero rubbing problems, now stock other than that, not the greatest offroad, got the belly stuck on things often, but had it had a proper lift I know it would have been great too. My 05 LJ has a 5.5 RE lift and a long arm plus just about everything else done to it. I love it! I have been back and forth between the taco and wrangler for a long time, for me bottem line it came down to being able to go topless and doorless. I spend a large portion of my year this way, the feel of the open air is a hands down for me after the plunge. But once again if I could I would own both. Its a tough decision and I feel you, but for me its jeep all the way!

Oh and to add, I was the only taco rollin with a group of jeepers and we had one 69 fj with us, I never had any issues keeping up on the trails and even impressed them many a time with mine when it was stock. I used to rag on the jeepers but when I took my first trip with a friend riding shot-gun and the tops and doors were off, that was it! As far as interiors, I hated the taco, Im short so leg room isnt the issue, I hated all the plastic! It seemed to be to much of it and kinda a pain to add switches or remove things to get in to wire up stuff. It looked nice but to me felt cheap. The 2012 JKU has a very nice interior and was pleased with it, my 05 obviously is no comparison but I like the simplicity of it much more.
