I'm Getting Around To It
Is it just the tensioner that screwed you? Or the whole kit
It was his tensioner, as I recall.
I used a kit but added a complete Aisin water pump (both halves) and an OEM tensioner.
I strongly suggest replacing the 1/4" hoses behind the water pump when you have it apart. I used high quality silicone. You need about 2 feet or less. At the same time, replace the 3/8" throttle body hoses; you'll need 3 feet or less of that. One of those devil 1/4" hoses broke on mine and you basically are in for a complete timing belt job to replace them since the entire water pump has to come off to get to them. Also make sure to use an OEM o-ring on the back half of the water pump.
I have also has a crank bolt break on me, flush to the crank snout. What a joy that was to get out, as it came down to drilling through the remains of the bolt, cutting the bolt from the inside out (ruined the threads in the crank) then using a Time-Sert insert to allow me to use the latest version of the crank bolt and washer. Naturally I had to replace the timing belt gear and the harmonic balancer to assuage my fears of damaged goods (the timing gear had its roll pin shear off and I felt it was too sketchy to just try to put in a new one).
Between the two problems listed above, I lost a lot of off-road time. I don't have a garage, so looking back on it, the lost time also hurt me because my tires were sitting out in the Phoenix sun for the entire time the truck was down, aging them slowly but surely. The cost of the 1/4" hose plus the crank bolt and washer was probably less than $30 and both of those things should have been addressed when it got its previous timing belt job just before I bought the truck, but weren't. Guess it showed me...
