To LR4 from JKUR? Need advice...

A friend of mine bought this 2006 LR3 around 8:00 PM Monday night - 14 hours later he was participating in a trail ride in North Georgia on street tires in a completely stock vehicle.

It has about 87K miles on it and he got it for just over $14,000 - it's the HSE model with the rear locker. Very nice truck.

I bought a 2007 model almost two years ago - its a great vehicle that doesn't seem to be nearly as problematic as the earlier Discovery versions and with 300 HP its a great tow vehicle.

I want to thank all of you for the comments, information, and pictures. This near-future purchase keeps looking better and better regardless of direction, just a matter of locating the proper deal. Not only has the universe dropped hints such as the union jack hanging in my brothers new garage, but the wife just got a sizeable raise yesterday to boot (which will easily allow for a substantial payment bump in the budget if required). Combine that with the fact that she didn't resist when shopping the Rover dealers yesterday, things are looking quite well. Even when I keep dropping not-so-subtle hints about acquiring one, she doesn't argue, she laughs and even told my mother-in-law "If he wants one, you know we'll end up getting it." So now I'm on the mad hunt for either a great deal on a newer LR4 or potentially an LR3... Anywho, just wanted to say thanks guys! I might ask for opinions if I locate a good match, for I know little more than what I've researched on this and a few other forums.

Don't be afraid of a well maintained unit with higher mileage. Interiors and drivetrian hold up very well. It's hard to beat the value for money of the LR3 and they are more pure to the original Discovery concept than the LR4 but the extra power 5.0L is nice to have.

If you can wait until they release the next generation Discovery 5? Then prices will obviously come down.

The biggest drawback to the LR3\4 is the colossal weight. Don't buy a V6. The weight wears brakes, suspension components and tyres quickly and makes off roading in certain situations very difficult. You will also get crappy mpg.

Agree on all. Will also add that the relatively long wheelbase can also become a liability at times off road, causing the truck to get hung up, even with the largest tires you can fit with a lift. As long as you have good skid plates, sliders, a winch or someone else along to pull you out not a serious problem in most cases though. Definitely leagues ahead of most other Rovers on the road for sure.

My stock 06 LR3 V6 se been great. Even on street tires on trails. Paid $10995 here in CT last year with 72k. Thought it was a steal. Good luck finding one

Be very careful as once you acquire the LR4, the missus is going to want to drive it all...the...time. I bought my Rubicon just so I could recover from the LR4 being 'stolen' from me by my wife.

You may want to hang on to the JKU a little while, that is my advice.

Well, got some time to drive the LR4 today, I'm completely in love. My Jeep felt like a garden tractor on the way home. Seeing if numbers will line up, if not I'll hunt another one down. I have to have one now!

It's an addiction for sure. I started with a new LR4 and ended up buying a RRC for a trail rig. I've since traded the LR4 for a diesel F250 but I miss the LR4 most days when I'm not towing (don't get me wrong, the LR4 tows great for what it is).

Now I'm realizing that the F250 is doing a number on my back, so I'm between Carli suspension for the F250, a half-ton truck or maybe a gently used 10-13 Full size Range Rover.

Nick325i,

DO NOT drive a 10-13 full-size range rover.

That's a lot of money on a used car you are going to put down after you do so....

I can't wait to get mine. ;)

Alright, opinions on 2 vehicles if you would...wife gave solid approval tonight. My buddy has a 12 HSE with 26k miles for $47k, or the local LR dealer has a certified 11 HSE with 37k for $38k. ?

The '11 HSE certified...no brainier. It's nice to have a total of 6 years or 100k peace of mind. Plus you're saving 9 k.
