Hey man, I know exactly where you are coming from. I did precisely the same thing, going from 2002 SC SE Xterra to a 2005 X. The newer Gen has a much, much better engine that is a lot more fuel efficient. I think you would love the next gen Frontier. Cheers and good luck

That's sad to hear. My wife's first gen is a bit of a gas hog too but she loves it and its not nearly as bad as what you're getting. If hers dropped that low I'd start looking for issues. I don't always keep track but with steel wheels and really heavy Goodyear MTRs I think the lowest ive seen is 11 or 12.

Thanks for the support. I've driven a 2006 Nismo 6 speed, and my God that was a good drive. That engine and transmission setup is fantastic. When I was looking at Frontiers, I fell in love with the second gens. They are such a good looking and well built pickup. They are just perfect for what I want to do. I'm already researching mods for the next truck :)

Yeah, it's not the ideal outcome. I really wish I could make it work. I have no idea why the range is so bad. The engine is running great, I've done all sorts of maintenance and repairs on it recently, so I know it's in good shape. I'm as perplexed as anyone.

16.4 gallons...145 miles...that's closer to 8.8 mpg. Is that really where your truck is sitting mpg-wise? I hate to see such a dedicated owner/build thread throw in the towel (I just started following your thread, great pics/commentary) because of poor mileage.

I noticed a few pages back you were speaking with Steven Lutz...have you picked his brain on your mileage issues? I can relate to the weight issue myself, but even on my worst days with my mod-set up I'm grabbing 10-12 mpg...15-16 highway loaded for Moab.

Respect your Gen II Fronty wishes...just dig your truck and hate to see it go. Best of luck with the new direction.

I can relate to these numbers, I was regularly in the 11s on highway and sub 10s in the city. It continued until i did 2 things, relocate the knock sensor and actually pay attention to the cfms that the SC demands. After I resolved those two issues, getting 14-15 highway and 13 city. Averaging 200-220 miles per tank. Its been a long road, Check out my fuelly chart (log book, show last 100)
http://www.fuelly.com/driver/stiflersmom/xterra

Showing the last 100 fuelups, you can see 10/18/11 when I did the knock sensor relocate, and mpgs dipped again 7/11/13 when i tried to figure out the sealed snork, 8/18/12 through 6/7/13 was running stock airbox, no snork connected.

Still a far cry from the newer model X and fronties, but much more manageable. I dont want to sway you, but love the truck and its build.

That being said, i would wait a year or so to see if they really do end up with a diesel fronty.

It's understandable, but I feel like the newer Frontier will be a far better platform to do what I'm looking to do. I know what I have now is a nicely outfitted truck and all that, but I've always had my eye on a second gen. It's the truck I've been wanting since I got rid of my Land Rover. The greatly increased range would be enough to sway me, but the nicer interior, ride comfort, and exterior looks all help. Couple all this with something else I've been thinking about...

I'm engaged, planning to start a family within the next five or so years. Having more interior space is important. I'm thinking long term, and the extra space for a family is something important.

I know a lot of people are bummed out that this build is ending, and I'm bummed too. But I don't feel like it's a good idea to continue putting money into a truck I'm unhappy with.

I would love to have a diesel Frontier. I think it's going to happen, but not until the next generation/body style. And I don't have the money for a brand new truck. I'll probably be able to afford a sub 100k 2005-2008, hopefully a Nismo.

Rust does a body good.
The early second gens had a weaker locker. If you want a 6speed you'll have a hard enough time finding one without a locker. 6speeds with a locker are a unicorn of sorts.

Thank you my friend!

Agreed, and I would wait for one with the locker, even if it takes a little longer, I think it will pay off in the end

That is what I'm going to try to do. There was a 2006 Nismo for sale here in town not too long ago, and it was perfect. I see Nismos and Pro-4x's all over, so one with a locker shouldn't bee too terribly rare. If it goes for a while and I don't find one though, I'm okay with getting an open diffed truck and throwing an ARB in at a later date.

I'm not really concerned about the transmission to be honest. It doesn't really make a difference to me. Getting one with a locker is the important thing. If it's a manual, then great, I don't have to do the bypass mod, I'll probably get better mileage, and it'll be more fun to drive (in certain situations). If it's an auto, then great, I don't have to shift, don't have to think about clutches, and off road pedal work will be a lot easier. As long as it's a crew cab short box, 4x4, and is within budget, I'll be happy. If it's got a locker, I'll be elated.

I've seen a bunch of six speeds for sale out here. Guess they just all ended up in the northwest :D

When I bought my 6 speed Xterra it was one of two that I was able to find within a reasonable driving distance.

So sad to see Nancy go. But I'm in the same boat; I understand your pain!

Hell, I've been looking at Gen 2 Frontiers myself...

Good luck in your quest to get a gen 2. Looks like your truck was built up well, looking forward to seeing what you do with one of these.

Aside from custom stuff there is no carryover between gen 1 and 2.

I am sad as well. She'll still be around for some great adventures, but she'll be gone as soon as possible. The VG33 is a very reliable engine, but the utter lack of any kind of efficiency is really annoying.

There is something unbelievably attractive about them isn't there?

You and me both! The build goal is the same, so the basic style will be very similar. Just more modern :)

Which parts are you planning on carrying over to the new fronty, if any?

Aside from custom stuff there is no carryover between gen 1 and 2.

Allof75, like Sponge said, there really isn't any carryover unfortunately. So none of the parts I have for this truck will work. The tent and bed rack will get carried over to the next truck, but beyond that, nothing. I briefly toyed with the idea of taking the lights off the roof and using them on the gen 2. But I decided against it in favor of something I think will be much more slick and modern looking.

My idea is to get a rack that's similar to this made: http://www.bajarack.com/tacoma2-ut. BajaRack could do it, they've been known to do many custom jobs. Xoskel could very well do it as well. That particular style rack will create very little drag and wind noise while still being really useful for carrying stuff. Then I will mount a 40" LED light bar on it. It'll be expensive, but it will provide much better flood lighting in a smaller, more streamlined package. Plus I think it will look awfully cool :)

Here's my plan thus far for the truck I haven't bought, haven't seen, and can't afford :D

-OME lift
-255/85R16 Cooper ST Maxx tires
-ARB front bumper (because the Shrock takes too damn long and the TJM, which I think is the best looking, probably won't fit.)
-Home built dual swing out rear bumper
-TJM snorkel
-Home built sliders
-Shrock skids
-Tent and bed rack
-Dual batteries

.... Couldn't help but plan the build already :D
