New Project (S15 Jimmy)

project like this really requires some DIY tallent, you will end up spending a fortune on repairs if you dont learn to do lots yourself, the CUCV would be a better option for a "project vehicle" they are better built, stronger and easier to work on the, but im biased towards the full size.

I'm leaning much more to the K5's side, more-so because of the similar body style of the Suburban I had. I felt more comfortable in it then I do this little Jimmy. The Jimmy was a "best choice at the time" vehicle. I do have to say, for all of it's flaws, it's a tough little truck. Just not the right truck for me. Especially with all the power options... Call me crazy, but I've always been a fan of manual windows... The nice thing is, if I find a problem I can't fix, there's a well-known diesel shop a town away.

The deal may fall through though, after I asked him if he had the title I haven't heard from the guy since. :\

I figured I'd share this while I'm thinking about it. My idea is to stick to the Jimmy until I find a CUCV for less than $4250, or buy one of the ones sold at a place in Illinois. (They clean them up pretty well there, and at least I don't have to worry about rust) If I find one that is less than said price and in good enough condition I'll just grab it. Here's a link to that place though. Right now I don't see any rigs. They normally have 2 new ones every 2 weeks or so.

If you're looking to reduce complication, the CUCV is most definitely the way to go. My glow plug relay has been bypassed to a dirt-simple relay and push button; works flawlessly. The only other electrical connections required to start and run it are a cable to the starter motor, and another wire to the fuel shutoff solenoid on the injection pump.

Injection pumps are the only non field-serviceable part on the motor. Look for Badger Diesel on eBay for a rebuilt unit just for the piece of mind, his prices are low and mine has been flawless so far.

I too have coveted CUCVs at Motorsource. They also occasionally have ex-NPS and ex-Forest Service vehicles.

I've stopped by a couple of times and the guys there seem to be on the up and up. I test-drove a Discovery, and it was solid and they were asking a good price.

Good luck!

I'm definitely looking to reduce complication, less things to do wrong. The only things I'm thinking about putting in are an AC unit and a simple CD player. Nothing too fancy. After that is anything for my build, but I'm not sure what all that will entail yet...

A little info about the current M1009 I'm looking at. He's asking $1000 for it. He just replaced the injection pump and has newer injection lines. That makes it all the more tempting for me. There is a bit of rust work to be done on it though. As I haven't learned to weld yet, does anyone have an idea what it'd cost to get done at a shop?

The seat was just sitting there at the time. Now it's facing forward and held by the seatbelt.

As you probably know, CUCVs run dual alternators for the 24v systems. You'd have to convert to a 12v starter and remove one alternator to mount the AC compressor. Civilian 6.2s did come with AC, so the brackets are already out there.

I hear there are systems that you can install that don't get rid of the 24v. Although I guess I should ask, what are some benefits of keeping the 24v system in the truck, and then arguments against it.

Also, I'll be going to check it out this next weekend here. He's replacing the fuel pump at the moment. The one he bought didn't work so he sent it back and is now waiting for the replacement.

Well I went to go look at it last Sunday... Wasn't impressed at all. He had a lot of things in the engine ripped out at the time, and it looked like he was ghetto-rigging some stuff in there as well. I'd rather not risk it. Not to mention he was a little more than discreet about some of the cosmetic issues... At least until I got there.

He neglected to mention the tailgate is busted and has a few rusted holes. Also has a new bumper on it, but it's welded on crooked.

It looks like the police department put down some rubber flooring, but I can see where it was starting to tear apart.
IMG_20120422_153319.jpg

The inside was pretty good. But for some reason there was an exposed 24V line in the engine compartment and in the back of the truck. I've never seen an exposed line like that, and that's one of the big reasons I opted out. All I need is someone to shock themselves...
IMG_20120422_153350.jpg

I asked him whether there was bad rust on it, he said no. I asked him whether it went into the cab. He said no. The cab corner here was rusted clear through. It's not like you're going to fall through it, but still. The fact that he lied about that made me wonder what else he had "forgotten" about.

The picture doesn't quite do it justice, but there's a big dent in the passenger door where he go impatient at a gas station and his a low cement barrier...
IMG_20120422_153453.jpg

The dent doesn't travel completely inside the door, but when looking I realized that the floor under the door was rotted out pretty bad.
IMG_20120422_153635.jpg

It was also coated in some pretty thick rust on the underside. Enough that you could take a knife and knick a chunk off.

Needless to say he still has it, but I got to drive 200 miles or so. Got to see what it was like out up a ways north, and it sure makes me feel a bit better knowing that the state isn't all like south Milwaukee. :p

It is a shame that it is in that condition. I bought mine for $1500.00 with 60k miles on it. I need a new driver door, front fender, fixing minor rust spots, and a new windshield, but it has worked well. At least it did until I found out half of the glow plugs are bad. As soon as I get the money to replace all eight I am going to. I have to put A/C in it though because the Mrs. is a wuss and cant stand heat even with the windows down. If it wasn't raining today I was going to work on the axles I am going to throw under it.

I'm being pretty picky. Now is not the best time to get a project. Hell, I have to pay to park in the street, so I'm limited to even changing my own oil. (People drive like bats out of hell down our street, and it's horribly slanted and pot-holed.) Needless to say, unless someone really just wants to get rid of their's at a good price, I'll probably be getting a cleaned up one from Motorsource Inc.

Speaking of which, they have one in stock I can show finally!

Also, just throwing this out there, there's a diesel Ford Excursion too. Just noticed it and remembered some like them for Overlanding. :p

Saving my pennies to save me from a headache basically.

Hate to say it, because I love my S10 and those blazers, but I think she is a little far gone. The CPI system is known for fuel leaks, and these things are absolute rust magnets. I would just try and get your money back out of it. These trucks tend to start destroying front end components when lifted as well.

Yeah, I'm a little sad to have to sell any truck I have really. This one's been a great DD for reliability. Still needs that oil change, but I've got 2 days off to do that.

Possible good news ahead, I saw this on a site while doing half-assed truck searches. (Yes, I do it for fun.) It's about 45 minutes from here, and an M1009. The one's off Gov. Liquidation normally are more rusted than this one, so it caught my attention.

The front passenger-side wheel well is rust-free.
MVC-001S.JPG

Under the door isn't bad either. Enough I can let immediate repair slide for now.
MVC-002S.JPG

The rear looks great as well.
MVC-003S.JPG

Tailgate has a little spot. No big deal right now.
MVC-004S.JPG

This one is the driver's side rear. Looks pretty bad.
MVC-005S.JPG

One of the worst spots.
MVC-006S.JPG

Under the cab is bad, but a door dent isn't a huge deal for me.
MVC-007S.JPG

Probably will want to get a new inner fender sometime.
MVC-008S.JPG

The floor is only bad on the driver's side for some reason.
MVC-009S.JPG

Behind the driver's seat.
MVC-010S.JPG

It's definitely not in the best condition, but it's better than what I have. If it turns out to be a burden I can sell it, but reap the mileage for a while. That's what I'm thinking at least. What do you guys think?
