Wheel/rim dilemma.

After a little more looking around on the internet, I believe I have no idea what I'm doing.

I guess I can't run a 9.5" tire on these rims I have, I'd need at least a 10.5. Not what I was hoping for. Back to the drawing board!

(Anybody want to buy either set of wheels? :D )

I know I and many others would love to be able to fit 15" wheels on our trucks. More sidewall and you can get an all terrain that is tall and skinny. If it were me I'd find some stock 4runner wheels for your year or get some plain old Outlaw II wheels and then get some BFG 33x10.5x15 and enjoy!

But then again these are our opinions and you're you so do what you like. :sombrero:

Alloy wheels crack, steel wheels bend and can be hammered back into shape if necessary...

That's true, although I've personally never seen an OEM alloy wheel crack. I've hit them pretty hard and had zero issues (except cosmetics).

OP - I'd do as others suggested--sell them both, and find some first gen Tacoma wheels (which are plenty) for cheap. I've bought 16" alloys for $40 and see them all the time for less than $100. The steel 15"ers are even cheaper. I'd avoid Tundra wheels (unless they're the 5-star, which are also found on 01-04 Tacomas), because the backspacing is 5"+, whereas 95-04 Tacomas are at 4.625" (also 3rd gen 4Runners).

For tires, if you want to stay under 33", 31x10.5x15's can be had for cheap. That's what I use.

Here is another awesome tire calculator:

http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tirecalc.php

I to hate what the aftermarket wheel market has to offer has well.....To much bling bling for me....

I'm currently running steels wheels that are a pain to keep balanced.

I would run a 15" rim with my Tacoma but with Tundra brakes it is a no go! 33x10.5 is sure a great looking tire.

I think the factory look is where it is!

You'll have more tire options if you go with a 16 or 17". My favorite tire for the past 25 years, a 32/11.5-15 BFG All Terrain ....has been on backorder since October...had to break down and go with a different brand. I narrowed it down to 3 tires in that size...and still didn't get really what I wanted. Could of went to a 16" rim with a 275 tire to stay with BFG AT and get kinda close to a 32" tire. Just didn't want to spend the extra money. Would of cost me basically half of new set of tires to upgrade to a 16" rim 275 tire...

16" seems like a good compromise between 15 and 17" :ylsmoke:

My general rule of thumb for off road 15" rim 29-33" tires

16" 31-34+"

17" 35+

I found a set of FZJ-80 wheels on craigslist. I then took them into work and sandblasted them and off to the powdercoater's they went for a coat of semi-gloss black. I was going to go with the General Grabbers but ended up running Treadwright 285/75/16s with teh BFG AT copy tread. The Treadwrights are a tad heavy but have been fabulous and balanced right up. I got about 20k on tehm and they are holding up fine.

I'm really wanting to run some FJC or Tundra steel 16 hole wheels! I love the 'old school' look :D

A few years ago you could buy brand-new take-offs at lots of tire shops in CA for $40/each. I bought five that way.

I thought this over for a few weeks and decided to keep my factory SR5 alloys and wrap them with BFG 33 10.50 15 AT's. They are cheaper than any comparable size 16" and I didn't need to buy new wheels. The 33 10.50 rides awesome and even fit without rubbing on a stock 2nd gen.

Picked up some 16x7 2000 4Runner wheels from a buddy for helping him put in his OME lift, that should do the trick!

Now to decide what size tire to run.

Any suggestions?

Something 31" would be the max tire size I can run for now. 4.10 gears/Auto/blown shocks.

You have quite a few options on those 16x7s:

245/75R16 (not too tall and not too wide)

265/70R16 (About a 31x10.50--the common stock size on 3rd-gen 4runners with 16x7 wheels)

265/75/R16 (About a 31.5x10.50--my parents have this on their 3rd-gen on 16x7's)

235/85R16 (About a 32x9.50) Tall and skinny, heavy duty (load range E).

255/85R16 (About a 32.5x10)

etc... etc...

I'm thinking hard about 235/85/16. Is it common enough? I'm also looking at brands. I'm looking at the Yokohama Geolander AT/S. I already have a set on my daily driver CRV, so I have experience with them. The runner ups would be BFG AT's and General Grabber AT2. I know BFG AT's get a lot of praise here, but what about the Grabbers?

Sorry, the bit of savings is not worth the risk of running a retread. I'd rather leave that out of a failure equation. If I buy them, and they fail, then I'm going to blame the product, because it's a retread. If it doesn't fail, then I lucked out for 30-40k that people have been seeing out of them. I'd rather not be in that position, because I'll be pissed that I should have just spent the extra 200 for a new set of rubber. THat's just my opinion though, if they are running great for you, then good on ya!
